Over 50 people arrested after violence in Bahraich
Over 50 people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district as the city slowly started returning to normal after violent clashes on October 13, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man.
The mobile internet and broadband remained suspended in Bharaich’s Mahsi Tehsil after the clashes as senior police and civic administration officials remained on the ground to maintain the law and order situation.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash and Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta are camping in Bahraich following the instructions by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath.
“The situation is reverting to normalcy. The route between Bahraich and Sitapur has been reopened. Security and patrolling are being ensured in the 20-km radius of Maharajganj with the deployment of personnel from the police, Rapid Reaction Force (RRF), and the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) along with senior officers of the district police and administration. There is heightened vigilance, especially in sensitive areas,” Yash told reporters.
Divisional Commissioner Devipatan, Shashi Bhushan Sushil, said that peace and order are being upheld throughout Bahraich, adding that the violence-affected areas have been divided into nine sectors, with activities being monitored closely.
“Police and district administration officials are deployed in two shifts across all sectors, continuously patrolling the areas and assessing the situation. Additionally, nine barriers have been established in the affected zones to check and question individuals entering and exiting these areas,” he said.
Bahraich’s District Magistrate Monika Rani said that a control room has been established to assist residents, providing relief kits to families impacted by the violence. Additionally, a revenue team is surveying to assess the damage, ensuring that the administration will provide all support to people affected by the violence.
So far, 52 people have been arrested, Bahraich SP Vrinda Shukla said, adding that two more FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence, and police teams are conducting raids based on video footage to arrest the identified accused.
