GHAZIABAD— The police have submitted a 14-page charge sheet before the court in connection with the sexual harassment accusations leveled against cricketer Yash Dayal.
Investigative findings, authorities claim, substantiate the allegations, and as part of the evidentiary package, surveillance footage from the hotel and hotel records have been included.
Origins of the Complaint and Initial Investigation
A complaint was lodged on June 21 by a young woman residing in the Indirapuram area. She filed her grievance on the Chief Minister’s portal, asserting that Yash Dayal had misled her with promises of marriage and had subjected her to both physical and mental harassment.
Following her social media pleas on platform X (formerly Twitter), the Indirapuram police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 24.
On June 27, the victim’s statement was recorded, and preliminary investigation unearthed several supporting pieces of evidence.
It also emerged that the alleged incident had occurred in a hotel under the jurisdiction of the Link Road police station, not in Indirapuram itself. Accordingly, the case investigation was shifted to the Link Road police for further inquiry.
During the course of the investigation, on June 28, police issued a notice to Dayal, asking him to present his statement within three days.
Though the cricketer did not comply initially, a subsequent notice was also served. Eventually, Dayal appeared and furnished his statement on August 21 at the DCP (Trans-Hindon) office. The police also recorded statements from his parents as part of their inquiry, as confirmed by ACP Sahibabad, Shweta Yadav.
Allegations, Evidence & Legal Context
- The complainant’s grievance centers on sexual harassment under the pretext of marriage, alleging that the cricketer manipulated her trust over time and betrayed it.
- Authorities assert that the hotel footage and records provide crucial confirmation: the hotel stay and movements match the timeline claimed by the victim.
- Yash Dayal, known in professional circles as a left-arm fast bowler who plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), already faces separate legal troubles. He is accused in another case filed in Ghaziabad under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses sexual intercourse obtained through deception or false promises of marriage.
- A second FIR involving a minor in Jaipur has also been filed against Dayal, with allegations that he engaged in repeated sexual assault over a span of years — charges that are being pursued under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
- In light of these overlapping legal challenges, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has imposed a ban on Dayal from the upcoming season of the UP T20 League.
Court Proceedings, Arrest Stay & Current Status
While the police build their case, Dayal has moved to protect his legal position. In the Allahabad High Court, he has sought a stay on his arrest and quashing of the FIR filed in Ghaziabad. The High Court has granted interim protection from arrest, allowing further legal arguments and counter-affidavits to be filed before the matter proceeds.
The complexity of the case is heightened by the fact that multiple allegations exist in different jurisdictions — from Ghaziabad to Jaipur — and that some involve minors, which invokes more stringent legal norms under POCSO and child protection statutes.
Implications & Reflections
- The filing of a detailed charge sheet indicates that law enforcement believes it has built a substantial evidentiary foundation, but the outcome will depend on courtroom scrutiny, cross-examination, and possible forensic corroboration.
- Yash Dayal’s case underscores the dilemma of public figures facing serious allegations: balancing the presumption of innocence with demands for accountability.
- If proven, the misuse of promises — especially in the context of personal relationships tied to professional aspirations — raises serious ethical and legal issues about consent, power imbalance, and abuse of trust.
- The involvement of a minor in a separate FIR intensifies the stakes and public scrutiny, making it imperative for investigators and courts to act with both rigor and sensitivity.
- The ban from the UP T20 League reflects how sporting bodies are responding more assertively when their players face serious criminal allegations, highlighting the interplay between sport, reputation, and legal accountability.
