A chilling case from Hamirpur has exposed how even those entrusted with enforcing the law can breach it with brutality.
A 30-year-old police sub-inspector, Ankit Kumar Yadav, has been arrested for the alleged murder of a woman he came in close contact with during an earlier investigation — a crime strikingly similar to cases he once probed against others.
Kiran, 30, a resident of Mahoba district’s Kabrai police station area, was found dead on the night of November 13 along a roadside in Ramna Kishanpur village under Maudaha police station.
With no initial identification, police circulated her photograph until her family recognised her.
During the investigation, CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts of a red car in the area soon led police to the vehicle owner in Mahoba.
He revealed that Sub-Inspector Yadav, a 2023-batch officer from Rae Bareli posted in Mahoba, had borrowed the car on November 12.
Yadav was detained and later confessed, Hamirpur SP Deeksha Sharma confirmed.
Police said Yadav had earlier investigated a dowry harassment case filed by Kiran against her husband and in-laws.
Over time, the two remained in touch and allegedly developed a close relationship. According to police, Kiran began insisting that Yadav marry her and threatened to implicate him if he refused.
On November 12, Kiran reportedly asked him to pick her up. While travelling toward Hamirpur, an argument broke out.
Yadav claimed he stopped the car, struck her on the head with an iron rod, and attempted to strangle her before leaving her unconscious on the roadside.
She was found dead the next morning.
Forensic teams have examined the crime scene and the vehicle; the post-mortem report is awaited. Yadav has been produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.
The case has once again underlined a disturbing truth — that men in uniform, despite their authority and responsibility, are not immune to committing the very crimes they investigate.
The law, however, treats every offender the same, and this case stands as a stark reminder that abuse of power cannot and will not evade accountability.
