An Emotional Goodbye: Deol Brothers Perform Dharmendra’s Final Rite on the Banks of the Ganga
In a deeply emotional and dignified farewell, the Deol family bid their final goodbye to legendary actor Dharmendra as his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, grandson Karan Deol, and other family members immersed his ashes in the holy Ganga at Haridwar on Wednesday morning.
The ceremony took place at a VIP ghat under heavy security, but the silence of grief spoke louder than any crowd.
Clad in simple white robes, the family stood together as they performed the sacred Asthi Visarjan ceremony.
Tears flowed freely as Sunny and Bobby held each other tightly, visibly overwhelmed by the loss of their father — a towering figure both on screen and within their lives.
The moment of immersion felt like the closing of a chapter deeply cherished by millions.
The rituals were conducted at Pilibhit House, a century-old heritage mansion on the banks of the Ganga, where Dharmendra’s ashes had been kept before the final rites.
Once the ceremony concluded, the grieving family quietly departed for the airport, avoiding public attention and maintaining the privacy with which Dharmendra lived his final days.
Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24 at the age of 89 due to age-related health complications, was cremated in Mumbai’s Vile Parle crematorium in a quick and private funeral.
Two prayer meetings were later organised separately — one by Sunny and Bobby with their mother, Prakash Kaur, and the other by Hema Malini with daughters Esha and Ahana Deol.
Sharing her emotions at the prayer meet, Hema Malini expressed deep regret that fans could not see Dharmendra one last time. She revealed that the decision for a quiet farewell was taken by his first family, adding in a voice heavy with sorrow:
“Dharmendra never wanted anyone to see him weak or in pain. He hid his suffering even from those closest to him. After someone leaves, the family must decide what is best, and they choose dignity and peace.”
The farewell at the Ganga was a moment of silence, love, and respect — a final act of devotion from sons to their father, from a family to the man who held them together.
