Approval Granted for Tourism Development Projects in Prayagraj – Buddhist Pilgrims Increasingly Visiting Kaushambi and Varanasi
Prayagraj: Tourism development work in Prayagraj is set to continue on a large scale. The tourism department has approved a new project that includes installing musical fountains along the Yamuna riverfront and creating a dedicated Buddhist Circuit Center. This initiative aims to strengthen Prayagraj’s position as a leading tourist destination.
- According to officials, a budget of ₹66 crore has been allocated under the 2025 tourism master plan for the development of the Yamuna riverfront and other heritage sites. The musical fountains will not only enhance the scenic beauty but also attract more visitors, particularly during the city’s cultural and religious festivals.
A major highlight will be the Buddhist Circuit Center, which will showcase the teachings, stories, and relics associated with Lord Buddha. This project is expected to significantly increase Buddhist tourism in the region.
Currently, a large number of Buddhist pilgrims from India and abroad visit Kaushambi and Varanasi due to their religious significance in Buddhism. However, the absence of a Buddhist center in Prayagraj has often limited pilgrim footfall. Authorities believe that once this new circuit center is established, Prayagraj will become a key stop for Buddhist devotees traveling between Kaushambi and Varanasi.
Construction work for the Buddha Vihar (Buddhist monastery complex) will soon begin in Prayagraj. It will include meditation halls, exhibition galleries, and digital displays showcasing important events from Lord Buddha’s life. Special efforts will also be made to connect the site with international Buddhist tourist routes, making Prayagraj a global attraction for spiritual seekers.
Officials emphasize that these new developments will not only promote religious tourism but also generate employment opportunities and boost the city’s economy.
