In a deeply shocking and tragic incident, popular Assamese film actress Nandini Kashyap, best known for her lead role in the recent blockbuster Rudra, has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old student in Guwahati.

According to Jayanta Sarathi Borah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, the actress was detained late Tuesday and formally arrested at around 1:30 AM on Wednesday. She was subsequently produced in court, where police sought a five-day custody remand to facilitate further investigation.

The fatal accident occurred in the Dakkhingaon area during the early hours of Friday. A speeding SUV, allegedly driven by Kashyap herself, struck a two-wheeler being ridden by Samiul Haque, a young student from Nalbari Polytechnic Institute.

Critically injured on the spot, Haque was immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and later shifted to Apollo Hospital for more intensive care. Despite all efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and friends.

Police and Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Grim Picture

Initially, the First Information Report (FIR) lodged did not name Nandini Kashyap. It was only after the death of the victim that non-bailable sections were added to the case, leading to her arrest. “The original FIR was filed under bailable sections because the victim was still alive. Following his death, we escalated the case and acted accordingly,” said DCP Borah.

However, the timeline of police action has raised eyebrows, especially after Borah admitted that the Traffic Branch was initially unaware of the incident. This statement has prompted public criticism regarding the delayed response and perceived preferential treatment afforded to the accused due to their celebrity status.

CCTV Footage and Eyewitness Testimony

A CCTV recording of the accident has surfaced, showing the chilling moment when Haque was hit and run over by the speeding SUV. The footage confirms what several eyewitnesses have claimed — that the actress did not stop after the collision, but rather fled the scene immediately.

Friends of the victim, who was returning home late at night after repairing streetlights for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) as part of his part-time job, bravely followed the vehicle. They reportedly traced the SUV to an apartment complex in Kahilipara, where they confronted Kashyap, who is believed to have been behind the wheel.

A Pattern of Reckless Driving?

Adding to the seriousness of the case, the DCP revealed that the vehicle used in the accident had been fined multiple times in the past for traffic violations, particularly speeding in various districts. This raises serious questions about reckless behavior and a lack of accountability on the part of the vehicle’s owner, who is now under scrutiny.

Meanwhile, forensic teams have conducted a preliminary examination of both the SUV and the two-wheeler. A detailed report on the mechanical and circumstantial aspects of the accident is expected within the next seven days, an official confirmed.

The Victim: A Life Full of Dreams Cut Short

The deceased, Samiul Haque, hailed from an economically weak background. Despite hardships, he was determined to continue his education and support his family. Working nights with the GMC while attending classes during the day, he represented the spirit of resilience, ambition, and hard work — a spirit tragically extinguished due to someone else’s alleged negligence.

His untimely death has not only devastated his loved ones but also ignited public outrage, especially over the delay in action and the role of privilege in such cases.
