Chinese Manjha Turns Deadly Again: Yogi Orders Murder Cases, Crackdown After Lucknow Tragedy

A day after a 36-year-old medical representative lost his life in a horrific Chinese manjha accident in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday directed that all deaths caused by the lethal kite string be registered as cases of murder.

The chief minister also ordered strict action against officials who failed to curb the illegal sale of Chinese manjha across Uttar Pradesh.

According to a senior officer, the CM took cognisance of the incident during a meeting at his residence and instructed authorities to launch an extensive statewide operation to ensure a complete ban on the sale of the dangerous nylon-coated string.

Stern legal action, he said, would be taken against those found manufacturing or selling it.

The victim, Mohammad Shoeb, a resident of the Dubagga locality, was riding his motorcycle towards the old city area on Wednesday when a Chinese manjha string suddenly got entangled around his neck on the Haiderganj flyover near the Eveready crossing.

Before he could stop, the sharp string slashed his throat, causing profuse bleeding. Bystanders rushed him to the trauma centre at King George’s Medical University, located about three kilometres away, but doctors declared him dead due to excessive blood loss.

Shoeb is survived by his mother, wife, and two minor daughters. He was the sole breadwinner of the family.

The tragedy comes close on the heels of strong directions issued by the Allahabad High Court, which last month ordered the state government to strictly enforce the prohibition on manufacturing, sale, and use of Chinese manjha while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The petition had sought a complete ban, citing multiple deaths and serious injuries caused by the deadly string.

Despite repeated fatal incidents over the years, authorities had failed to impose and effectively enforce a total ban on Chinese manjha until now.

While official figures are hard to come by, sources claim that hundreds of people across Uttar Pradesh have suffered near-fatal injuries, and many have lost their lives due to this razor-sharp kite string.

The latest death has once again exposed the grim consequences of administrative apathy and the urgent need for strict enforcement to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
