Class XII Student Held After Fatal Road Mishap in Lucknow’s Banthara; Six-Year-Old Dies, Five Injured

A Class XII student has been detained after he allegedly struck multiple pedestrians with a car in Lucknow’s Banthara locality on Thursday evening, resulting in the death of a six-year-old child and injuries to five others, including two women, police officials said.

Authorities stated that the teenager was returning home after attending his school’s farewell function when the incident occurred. Preliminary findings suggest that the student, who was driving a Maruti Swift Dzire, allegedly lost command of the vehicle.

The car is said to have first collided with an autorickshaw before veering toward people walking along the roadside.

Following the crash, the driver reportedly fled the scene in the same vehicle but later abandoned it. Police traced his whereabouts soon after and took him into custody.

The car, which belongs to one of his friends, has been impounded.

A case has been lodged at Banthara police station under sections about reckless and negligent driving, along with other relevant provisions.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajnish Verma confirmed that the accused claimed a tyre burst led to the mishap.

“The driver stated that the accident happened after one of the tyres gave way. The vehicle is registered in his friend’s name. We have detained him and seized the car,” Verma said.

The deceased child, identified as Dikshant Patel, was walking beside the road with his mother and grandmother near a Hanuman temple when the vehicle struck them.

He sustained critical head injuries and later passed away while undergoing medical treatment.

The injured have been identified as Dikshant’s mother, Sadhna (35), and grandmother, Meena Devi (60), along with Arman (12) and Awadh Bihari (42).

All were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment after police teams reached the spot upon receiving information about the incident.

Initial inquiries revealed that the accused had allegedly borrowed the car from a friend to attend the farewell gathering.

After the function concluded, he reportedly offered rides to four classmates. The collision took place while he was en route to drop off the final passenger.

The tragedy follows closely after another widely reported accident in Kanpur, where a Lamborghini Revuelto allegedly driven by Shivam Mishra, son of prominent tobacco businessman K K Mishra, crashed into several vehicles and injured a pedestrian.

Shivam was arrested by Kanpur Police on Thursday, produced before a court, and subsequently granted bail.
