CM Yogi Adityanath Pushes for Holistic Development of Mathura and Kanpur as Model Cities
By Tajdar H. Zaidi
Lucknow – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has underscored the need for a comprehensive and visionary approach to developing Mathura-Vrindavan and Kanpur as model cities, balancing modern infrastructure with cultural preservation and economic growth.
Chairing a high-level review meeting focused on the “Vision 2030” blueprint, the chief minister evaluated detailed proposals for the urban transformation of Mathura-Vrindavan and Kanpur.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from various state government departments, with district officials from both cities participating via video conferencing.
Yogi Adityanath emphasised that while Mathura-Vrindavan holds deep religious and cultural importance, Kanpur stands out as a historically significant industrial hub.
He stressed the importance of integrating these core identities into the respective development strategies. “Mathura’s spiritual heritage and Kanpur’s industrial legacy must be preserved and modernised hand in hand.
Both cities can serve as benchmarks of sustainable and inclusive urban development,” he said.
He highlighted that developing these cities as exemplary urban centres would align with the broader national goal of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’—a vision for a developed and self-reliant India by the year 2047, marking a century of independence.
Mathura-Vrindavan: Preserving Heritage While Building for the Future
Reflecting on the current state of the Mathura-Vrindavan region, the chief minister acknowledged the damage done by decades of unplanned urban expansion and encroachment.
He noted that this has not only led to environmental degradation but has also eroded the sanctity of many sacred sites.
In response to these challenges, the state government has prepared an ambitious development package. Officials informed CM Adityanath that 195 projects amounting to ₹30,080 crore have been proposed under the Mathura-Vrindavan master plan.
These projects focus on improving infrastructure while ensuring that the region’s religious, ecological and historical fabric is protected.
The chief minister issued specific directives to ensure that road connectivity, access to clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and resting areas for pilgrims at major temples and religious landmarks are prioritised in upcoming development work.
Importantly, he stressed that none of this should come at the cost of the spiritual and cultural sanctity of these sacred spaces.
He also hailed projects like the upcoming digital museum, a state-of-the-art convention centre, and the Green Path in Vrindavan as visionary initiatives that will benefit future generations.
“These are long-term investments that will enhance both the spiritual experience and the urban quality of life in Mathura-Vrindavan,” he remarked.
Kanpur: Reviving the Industrial Giant with Modern Infrastructure
Turning to Kanpur, the chief minister called for a revitalisation of the city’s industrial strength while addressing urban challenges such as pollution, waste management, traffic congestion, and ageing infrastructure. He noted that Kanpur’s potential as an economic engine of Uttar Pradesh must be fully realised through innovation and public-private partnerships.
He advocated for the active involvement of entrepreneurs, industrial leaders, youth, and local citizens in the planning and implementation processes. “Public participation is the backbone of any sustainable development,” he said, adding that stakeholder engagement would ensure that the plans reflect real, ground-level needs.
Yogi Adityanath stressed that modernising Kanpur’s infrastructure must go hand-in-hand with creating employment opportunities, improving the quality of life, and boosting local industries, particularly leather, textiles, and small-scale manufacturing.
A Unified Development Vision for the Future
Reiterating his commitment to balanced and inclusive development, CM Adityanath said that the transformation of Mathura and Kanpur will serve as a prototype for future urban planning in Uttar Pradesh and beyond. He highlighted the importance of aligning city-specific plans with national aspirations such as Viksit Bharat 2047 and Smart Cities Mission.
He concluded by urging all departments to maintain strict timelines, ensure transparency, and uphold accountability in the execution of all proposed projects.
With massive investments, careful planning, and community engagement, the twin focus on heritage and industry promises to make Mathura-Vrindavan and Kanpur shining examples of India’s urban renaissance.
