The urge to be on top of social media with the greatest number of followers has taken on a life.

Just days after the untimely death of content creator Misha Agrawal, her family has confirmed that the 24-year-old tragically took her own life.

In an emotional post shared on Misha’s Instagram account, her elder sister, Mukta Agrawal, revealed that Misha had been deeply affected by a recent drop in her Instagram follower count, which had become a major source of stress and emotional turmoil for her.

Mukta shared a poignant screenshot of Misha’s phone wallpaper, which captured the depth of her younger sister’s fixation on social media.

“Her phone wallpaper said it all. It reflected her only goal in life,” Mukta wrote. At the time of her passing, Misha had approximately 350,000 followers and was striving to reach the one-million mark—a milestone she had set as a symbol of success.

Mukta described how Misha had gradually become emotionally overwhelmed as her followers began to decline. “She started feeling worthless.

Since April, she had been slipping into depression. She would cry and tell me, ‘Jijja, what will I do if my followers keep dropping? My career will be over.”

Mukta, in her efforts to reassure and comfort her sister, reminded Misha of her academic achievements and future potential. Misha held an LLB degree and was preparing for the Provincial Civil Services – Judicial (PCSJ) examination.

Mukta said she often encouraged her sister to view social media as just one aspect of life, not the entirety of it. “I told her that she was talented, that she could become a judge one day. I tried to help her see Instagram as entertainment, not her whole world.”

Despite the family’s support and efforts to help her shift her perspective, Misha continued to spiral. “She let the pressure consume her, and ultimately, she couldn’t take it anymore,” Mukta shared. “She ended her life, leaving our family broken beyond words.”

Misha Agrawal passed away on April 24, 2025, just two days before her 25th birthday. Her sister shared the heartbreaking news through a post on her Instagram profile, writing:

“Misha Agrawal, April 26, 2000 – April 24, 2025. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Misha. We are still grappling with this immense loss. Thank you for the love and support you gave her. Please keep her in your thoughts and cherish her memory.”

In response to the tragedy, actor Taapsee Pannu expressed her distress and concern about the growing obsession with online validation.

“This is something I have long feared—seeing how much value people are placing on numbers. The need for virtual approval can blind us to the real love and worth surrounding us. It’s heartbreaking to witness this,” she wrote.

Misha’s death has sparked important conversations about the mental health toll of social media, the pressures of online influence, and the urgent need for emotional support and self-worth beyond digital platforms
