Coup In Bangladesh: PM Sheikh Hasina flees country Comes To India
Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country amidst violent student unrest and also pressure from Army Chief Waker- Uz- Zaman and fled her country along with her sister in an aircraft that was headed to India. She was supposed to land at Hindon Air Base at Sahibabad, Gaziabad and would be kept in a safe house in Delhi, suggest reports.
As per reports after staying in India she could go to England. The army chief in Bangladesh announced he would help form an interim government.
The sequence of events reminds one of the similar happenings in neighbouring Muslim countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Sheikh Hasina at the Hindon Airport.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed PM Modi about the sequence of events in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh PM has reportedly been moved to a safe place. It could not be known when she would proceed to England.
Back in Bangladesh, protestors stormed into the residence of Sheikh Hasina broke furniture and took out stored food while security forces watched.
Interestingly, the Bangladesh army chief told political leaders that the army would take care of law and order. One could imagine the dubious role of an army chief in a situation when the entire country was in deep turmoil.
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin ordered the release of jailed former PM Khaleda Zia hours after her arch-rival Sheikh Hasina was ousted and the army took control of the nation. Begum Khaleda Zia is the chairperson of the Bangladesh nationalist party.
Rahul Gandhi as leader of opposition spoke to S Jaishankar on the evolving situation in Bangladesh. MPs have expressed concern. Political parties have divergent views.
