Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet is perhaps a heartwrenching reminder to the world that love doesn’t always end with a happily-ever-after.
So was the case with two young lovers in east Delhi’s Jagatpuri, whose relationship ended in tragedy after an attempted suicide and a perhaps unforeseen death.
According to a report, 23-year-old Arjun living in Delhi’s Chand Park thought that he had found true love when he met a woman online last year.
Despite being madly in love with each other, the duo argued frequently on a range of issues, including the woman’s drive to build a career in law, and Arjun’s frequent partying.
While disagreements are part and parcel of relationships, things took a dark turn this Friday night when the two had another fight.
The woman reportedly also got into a quarrel with one of Arjun’s relatives over their relationship, and feeling insulted by the same, went home at around 11.30 pm and slit her wrists open.
Overwhelmed by emotions, the woman also filmed herself in the act and sent the video to Arjun on WhatsApp.
Shocked at his girlfriend’s drastic attempt to end her life, Arjun wasted no time in calling the woman’s mother and informing her of what was going on.
He then went straight to the woman’s house and rushed his bleeding girlfriend to the Guru Teg Bahadur hospital at around 2.45 am on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
Having barely made it to the hospital in time, an agitated Arjun began explaining to a nurse what had transpired, but things took an unexpected turn when he took a look at his bleeding girlfriend and collapsed.
Little did anyone know that it would be Arjun’s last act: despite efforts by doctors to resuscitate him, the 23-year-old succumbed to the cardiac arrest.
“Save her … she will die …,” were the 23-year-old’s last words to his friend, who had arrived at the hospital as well on an SOS call.
Doctors, however, managed to save the woman, who may not have made it had it not been for Arjun.

Police have informed both families involved about the fates of the youngsters. While Arjun’s body has been handed over to his family, the woman is currently recuperating and will survive.
