Dispute over tap water leads to murder of Union Minister Nityanand Rai’s nephew
In a shocking incident in Bhagalpur’s Nawgachia, a domestic dispute over access to tap water took a deadly turn on Thursday morning. The confrontation led to the tragic death of Vishwajit Yadav, the nephew of Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. The police have reported that Vishwajit was shot dead, allegedly by his own brother, Jayajit, during an altercation at their residence in Jagatpur village. Their mother, Hina Devi, who attempted to intervene and defuse the escalating conflict, also sustained a gunshot wound.
Authorities revealed that the dispute began early in the morning when an argument broke out between the wives of Vishwajit and Jayajit over drawing water from a supply tap. Witnesses stated that tensions between the two families had been building for some time, and minor disagreements had frequently surfaced over household matters. The altercation quickly escalated as both brothers became involved, each insisting on their claim to the tap water.
According to the police, Jayajit confronted Vishwajit while he was attempting to draw water, asserting ownership over the tap. What started as a verbal dispute soon spiraled out of control, leading to a violent struggle between the siblings. Investigators reported that Vishwajit, in the heat of the moment, pulled out a firearm and shot at Jayajit. However, in the ensuing scuffle, Jayajit managed to wrestle the weapon away from his brother and fired back. Tragically, Vishwajit sustained fatal gunshot wounds, leading to his immediate death.
Their mother, Hina Devi, rushed in an attempt to mediate between her sons and put an end to the violence, but she too was caught in the crossfire and suffered a gunshot wound to her arm. She, along with Jayajit, was immediately taken to a private nursing home in Bhagalpur for medical attention. Doctors at the facility confirmed that Vishwajit was pronounced dead on arrival, while Jayajit’s condition was reported to be critical. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred for advanced medical treatment at a specialized hospital.
Nawgachia Superintendent of Police, Prerna Kumari, provided details about the incident, stating, “Initial investigations indicate that the dispute between the two brothers originated over the water tap. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in both individuals firing at each other. A spent shell casing and a live cartridge have been recovered from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.”
A forensic team has been dispatched to the crime scene to collect crucial evidence, and authorities are now delving deeper into the background of the accused. Preliminary reports suggest that Jayajit may have a prior criminal record, prompting investigators to look into his history for any possible connections to past incidents of violence.
Local residents disclosed that although the two brothers lived under the same roof, their relationship had been strained for quite some time. Family disputes and unresolved tensions had reportedly existed between them, exacerbating the situation that ultimately led to the fatal altercation.
The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain all the factors that contributed to this tragic event. The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the severity of domestic disputes that can take a violent turn when left unresolved. Authorities are urging residents to seek legal and peaceful means to settle disagreements rather than resorting to violence. Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
