In a heart-wrenching incident that cast a pall of grief over Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, eight lives were tragically lost, including that of a groom named Suraj, when the SUV in which they were travelling met with a horrific accident late Saturday evening. The vehicle, reportedly carrying more than a dozen people, veered out of control at high speed and crashed violently into the boundary wall of a college.

According to preliminary investigations by local police authorities, the accident took place under the jurisdiction of Junawai Police Station. The SUV, severely overcrowded, was moving at an alarmingly high speed, as confirmed by eyewitnesses. One witness stated that the vehicle lost control moments before colliding head-on with the wall, leading to catastrophic damage and instant fatalities for several occupants.

Among the eight confirmed dead were the groom Suraj, his sister, three children, and three other adult passengers, all of whom were on their way either to or from a marriage ceremony. The joyous occasion turned into an unthinkable tragedy in a matter of seconds.

Emergency response teams, including senior officials such as Anukriti Sharma, the Additional Superintendent of Police, and the Circle Officer, swiftly arrived at the accident site along with a team of police personnel.

The damaged SUV was cordoned off as rescue and relief operations got underway. Authorities worked through the wreckage to retrieve victims and rush the injured survivors to a nearby government hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Their condition is being monitored closely by doctors, with some reported to be in critical condition.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident through a message posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and extended prayers for the recovery of the injured. In a compassionate gesture, the Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹50,000 for each injured person.

In addition, the Office of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also responded to the tragedy by posting a message in Hindi on X. The Chief Minister conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved families, describing the accident as a deeply saddening event.

He directed the district administration to ensure that the injured receive immediate and comprehensive medical care. CM Yogi Adityanath also offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those wounded in the crash.

As the region mourns this devastating loss, the tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of high-speed driving and overcrowding of vehicles, especially during celebratory occasions.

Law enforcement agencies are likely to launch a deeper inquiry into the circumstances that led to this accident, including possible negligence, and whether any traffic or safety norms were violated.

With wedding celebrations turning into scenes of mourning, the entire village and surrounding communities have been left in a state of shock and sorrow, grieving the untimely loss of lives in what should have been a moment of joy and togetherness.
