FIR Against OTT Film ‘Ghooskhore Pandit’ Sparks Protests in Uttar Pradesh; No Unrest Reported Outside the State So Far
On the directions of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an FIR has been registered against the director of the OTT film Ghooskhore Pandit at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow.
The action has been taken on charges of promoting social discord, hurting religious and caste sentiments, and attempting to disturb public order.
The Chief Minister has reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against any individual or content that seeks to undermine social harmony or inflame religious and caste-based emotions.
Acting on these instructions, the Hazratganj police took cognisance of the content from the film that was being circulated on OTT platforms.
Meanwhile, protests against the film were reported from several cities within Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi and Prayagraj, where demonstrators expressed strong opposition to what they termed as offensive and divisive content.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak thanked the Centre for accepting the state government’s request to direct OTT platforms to remove the film’s title.
In a statement issued on Friday, Pathak said the state had urged the Centre to intervene, arguing that the title promoted social hostility, and the request was accepted.
In Prayagraj, members of the National Parshuram Sena Brahmavahini staged a protest at Subhash Chowk in the Civil Lines area, condemning the film for allegedly insulting the Brahmin community.
During the demonstration, protesters burned effigies of filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and actor Manoj Bajpayee, beating them with slippers and raising slogans against the makers of the film.
Leading the protest, the organisation’s national president, Pandit Vimal Tiwari, described the film as “anti-Brahmin” and alleged that the use of the word Pandit in the title was part of a deliberate and well-planned conspiracy to malign the community.
He said such individuals do not represent society but are a blot on it, and should feel ashamed of their actions.
Issuing a warning, Tiwari asserted that the Brahmin community has the capacity to wage a decisive struggle against injustice.
He cautioned that if attempts to create false, derogatory, and hateful narratives against the community continue, they would be met with a nationwide, organised, and democratic movement.
Extent of Protests:
Based on available information so far, demonstrations and protests against the film have been reported only within Uttar Pradesh. There are no confirmed reports of protests or unrest related to the issue from other states at this stage.
