Four Days After Daylight Killing of Roadways Employee, Prayagraj Police Hunt Continues for Suspects
Prayagraj: Even four days after the daylight murder of contractual Roadways bus driver Ravendra Kumar, the main suspects remain at large.
Despite seven police teams from the city police, Crime Branch, and Special Operations Group (SOG) combing Prayagraj and surrounding districts, no arrests have been made so far.
However, authorities have arrested six people accused of harboring the suspects, all close relatives of the fugitives, and sent them to jail.
The brutal attack occurred on October 21 in broad daylight near a petrol pump at Mundera Chungi, where Ravendra Kumar was assaulted with bricks and stones, leading to his death.
CCTV footage of the attack circulated widely, intensifying public outrage. Following the incident, police registered an FIR against seven named and four unidentified suspects, and announced a reward of ₹25,000 for each accused.
The six individuals taken into custody for sheltering the suspects include Shamshad Ahmed and his son Subhan Ahmed (Neem Sarai, Mundera), Shami Hasan (Rasulpur, Kashipur), Shamim Ahmed (Nasirpur, Silna), Taufiq Ahmed (Abkarpur, Nawabganj), and Meraj Ahmed.
According to police, Shamim Ahmed, Taufiq Ahmed, and Meraj Ahmed already have prior criminal cases registered against them.
The Commissioner of Police has directed that charges of harboring suspects be treated under the purview of the murder case. Interrogations of the shelter-providers have reportedly yielded critical information about the whereabouts of the fugitives.
Suspects’ Criminal Background
Police records indicate that the suspects have long-standing ties to criminal activity.
Nuran, a named accused, has previous murder cases, attempted murder, cattle smuggling, and extortion. His brother, Hasnain, and son Ali also have cases, including illegal cattle slaughter.
In 2019, Nuran escaped after his family and accomplices attacked a police team in Mariyadih, injuring 11 officers and taking four inspectors hostage. Nuran managed to flee during the chaos.
Another named accused, Irfan, has a history of robbery, assault, and extortion.
In 2008, he was arrested for allegedly looting ₹44 lakh from a businessman. After being released on bail, he reportedly resumed criminal activities.
Police Alert on Possible Court Surrender
Investigations have revealed that the fugitives might surrender in court, as per information gathered from questioning close relatives.
In response, police are maintaining heightened surveillance around courts in Prayagraj and Kaushambi districts, ensuring that the suspects can be apprehended before they can turn themselves in.
The manhunt continues, as authorities work to bring the culprits to justice for the brazen daylight murder that has shaken Prayagraj.
DCP City Manish Shandiyal said six persons who gave shelter to the accused after they committed the murder have been arrested and sent to Jail for harboring criminals. He said police teams are on their job, and we will soon arrest the runaway criminals
