Four Killed, Five Critical After Speeding Car Ploughs Into Girls on Ganga Expressway Stretch in Rae Bareli
Four girls lost their lives, and five others sustained critical injuries after a speeding car ran them over on the under-construction Ganga Expressway in Jagatpur area of Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district on Sunday evening.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm, when nine girls from Kodar village were returning on foot after attending a bhandara (community feast) in neighbouring Chuli village.
As they were crossing a stretch of the yet-to-be-opened expressway, a car approaching from the opposite direction at high speed allegedly lost control and rammed into them.
Eyewitnesses said the impact was so severe that several of the victims were thrown onto the roadside. Residents immediately rushed to the spot and shifted all nine injured girls to a nearby hospital.
Doctors declared four girls, including three adults, dead on arrival. The remaining five victims — all minors — continue to battle for life, and their condition remains critical.
Driver Fled After Crash
After mowing down the victims, the car reportedly lost balance and crashed into a boundary wall a short distance away.
The vehicle was severely damaged. The driver abandoned the car and fled the scene within minutes of the accident.
Police sources said the vehicle is registered in the Kaushambi district. Authorities have seized the damaged car and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the accused.
Has the Car Been Traced? Who Was Driving?
While the vehicle has been identified and taken into custody, the driver is still absconding. Investigators are working to determine who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the vehicle owner is being questioned, and raids are underway to apprehend the suspect.
Rae Bareli Superintendent of Police Ravi Kumar confirmed that the stretch of the Ganga Expressway where the accident took place is officially closed to public movement as it is still under construction.
He added that strict action would be taken once the accused is arrested.
Background of the Expressway
The 594-km, six-lane Ganga Expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj is nearing completion and is expected to be inaugurated soon after February 15.
Built at a cost of ₹36,230 crore over four years, the expressway will provide east-west connectivity across 12 districts and 518 villages.
The project includes 14 major bridges, seven railway overbridges, 32 flyovers, and 453 underpasses, making it Uttar Pradesh’s fifth major expressway corridor.
Authorities are now reviewing how public access was possible on a stretch that remains officially closed.
