Four UP constables convicted of attempting to murder senior woman police officer in Bareily district
A local court in Bareilly has delivered a significant verdict, convicting four police constables for their involvement in an attempt to murder a senior woman police officer back in 2010. The verdict was passed after a prolonged legal battle that spanned over a decade. The convicted individuals have been identified as constables Ravindra, Manoj Kumar, Ravindra Singh, and Dharmendra. The court has scheduled the pronouncement of their sentencing for Monday, February 24.
According to reports, the incident took place in 2010 when Kalpana Saxena, who was serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Traffic at the time, sustained serious injuries, including fractures, after being allegedly dragged on the road by the accused. She was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment following the assault.
Special Public Prosecutor Manoj Bajpai confirmed that Special Judge Suresh Kumar Gupta of the Anti-Corruption Court-I delivered the conviction after thoroughly hearing the case. Upon their conviction, all four constables were immediately taken into custody and sent to jail.
The sequence of events leading to the crime began when Saxena received intelligence regarding police constables engaging in illegal activities, specifically extorting money from truck drivers in the district. Acting on the information, she decided to intervene and, accompanied by her bodyguard, reached the location in her private vehicle around 6:30 pm. Upon her arrival, she reportedly witnessed the four constables in the act of demanding money from the truck drivers.
As soon as the constables realized that they had been caught, they attempted to flee the scene in their vehicle. In response, Saxena pursued them, determined to apprehend those responsible. However, in a shocking turn of events, the accused allegedly attempted to run her over with their vehicle to evade capture. When she continued to resist their escape, they resorted to physically assaulting her, pushing her onto the road, which resulted in her sustaining multiple injuries.
Following the incident, an FIR was promptly registered at the Cantt police station. The authorities took immediate action, suspending the four accused constables from duty. After a detailed investigation into the case, the police filed a charge sheet, leading to their eventual conviction by the court.
Kalpana Saxena, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2010 batch, has continued to serve in law enforcement with distinction. Currently, she holds the esteemed position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate. Her commitment to duty and unwavering resolve in upholding justice have been widely recognized in the law enforcement community.
