Four workers lost their lives on Sunday after inhaling toxic fumes caused by a gas leak at a chemical plant in Dahej, located in Gujarat’s Bharuch district, police reported.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Saturday at the Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL) production unit, where a pipe leakage released hazardous fumes. The workers fell unconscious after exposure, Dahej police station inspector BM Patidar said.

They were immediately taken to a private hospital in Bharuch. According to officials, three workers succumbed to their injuries around 3 am on Sunday, while the fourth passed away at 6 am.

“The leak happened around 10 pm when the workers inhaled fumes from a pipe on the ground floor of the company’s CMS plant. All four were rushed to the hospital but tragically died,” Patidar explained.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, police added.

The deceased were identified as Rajesh Kumar (from Gujarat), Mudrika Yadav (from Jharkhand), and Sushit Prasad and Mahesh Nandlal (both from Uttar Pradesh), officials confirmed.

GFL’s Deputy General Manager, Jignesh Parmar, expressed condolences and assured a thorough inquiry. “The company is deeply saddened by this incident. We will cooperate fully with legal authorities and investigate the matter to provide clarity. Each deceased worker’s family will receive a compensation of ₹25 lakh,” Parmar stated.

Bharuch Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manisha Manani noted that three of the victims were from outside Gujarat.

“Four workers died following a gas leak at the GFL plant near Ambeta village. Their bodies have been sent to the civil hospital in Bharuch for post-mortem, and the investigation is underway,” Manani said.
