Gauhati High Court Orders Dedicated Fast-Track Court for Day-to-Day Hearing in Zubeen Garg Death Case
The Gauhati High Court has directed the establishment of a special fast-track sessions court to conduct continuous, day-to-day hearings in connection with the death case of noted Assamese artist Zubeen Garg, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Chief Minister stated that the decision is intended to accelerate the legal proceedings and demonstrates the government’s determination to ensure swift and effective justice.
He further clarified that until the newly designated exclusive court becomes fully functional, the existing Additional District and Sessions Court in Guwahati, which is currently handling the matter, will continue to conduct hearings on a daily basis without interruption.
At present, the case is being heard in a sessions court after the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which carried out a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, filed its chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court.
In its report, the SIT invoked charges of murder against four individuals — Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the Northeast India Festival Singapore; his manager Siddharth Sharma; and fellow musicians Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta — alleging their involvement in the case.
