Hema Malini Reflects with Pride and Emotion as Dharmendra is Honoured with Padma Vibhushan
Veteran actor and politician Hema Malini on Monday expressed deep happiness, pride, and a touch of poignancy as her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra, was posthumously awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan.
While welcoming the honour with gratitude, she shared that she wished the recognition for his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema had come during his lifetime.
Speaking to ANI after the announcement made on the eve of Republic Day, Malini said the moment was one of collective joy, not just for their family but for millions of admirers across the country.
“This honour makes us immensely happy — and I believe the whole nation feels proud today. Had it come earlier, Dharmendra ji would have been overjoyed himself, and his happiness would have doubled the joy of his countless fans,” she said, her voice reflecting both pride and nostalgia.
The Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, has been conferred on Dharmendra for his exceptional and distinguished service to the arts.
The announcement was made as part of the official Padma Awards list for 2026, released by the Ministry of Home Affairs ahead of Republic Day celebrations.
In a separate statement, Hema Malini described the recognition as long overdue and richly deserved.
“So proud that the government has finally acknowledged Dharam ji’s immense contribution to the film industry by bestowing upon him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan. I am truly grateful to the Centre for honouring his legacy,” she said.
Fondly remembered as Hindi cinema’s original ‘He-Man’, Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89.
His remarkable career spanned over six decades, during which he captivated audiences with his charismatic screen presence, warm smile, and remarkable versatility. \
Widely regarded as one of the most iconic actors in Indian cinema, his legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and film lovers.
His illustrious filmography includes timeless classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, and Anupama, each showcasing different facets of his immense talent.
In December last year, Hema Malini had organised a prayer meet in the national capital to honour his memory.
The gathering witnessed the presence of prominent political leaders, celebrated personalities from the film industry, and close admirers who came together to pay tribute to the legendary star.
The Padma Vibhushan now stands as a lasting symbol of the nation’s respect and gratitude for Dharmendra’s extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema — a fitting honour for a man whose films continue to live on in the hearts of millions.
