The Holi celebrations at the historic Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai witnessed enthusiastic participation from various social and Hindu organizations. The temple, which had remained closed for several decades, was finally reopened to the public in December last year. This reopening came after it had been shut down in the aftermath of violent riots that took place in 1978.

Authorities ensured a peaceful and secure atmosphere for devotees and visitors as they gathered at the temple to celebrate the festival of colors with great fervor. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra, ample police personnel were stationed in and around the temple premises to maintain law and order. “Holi is being celebrated peacefully at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai. We have deployed sufficient security forces to ensure a smooth and joyous festival. People are participating in the festivities without any concerns, as all necessary measures have been taken to maintain safety,” he assured.

The temple holds significant religious and historical importance and is located near the Shahi Jama Masjid, a site that has been at the center of tensions in recent months. On November 24, 2024, communal violence erupted in the vicinity following a protest during a court-mandated survey of the mosque premises. The violence tragically resulted in the loss of four lives and raised concerns over law and order in the region.

The reopening of the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple on December 13, 2024, came as a surprise to many. Authorities revealed that the structure was rediscovered during an anti-encroachment drive in the area. Upon clearing unauthorized constructions, officials reportedly came across the temple, which had been concealed for decades. Inside the premises, an idol of Lord Hanuman and a Shivling were found intact, adding to the temple’s spiritual and cultural significance.

The temple is also known by another name—Bhasma Shankar Temple—and is revered by devotees for its religious sanctity. Since its reopening, a large number of worshippers have been visiting the temple regularly, and it has become a focal point for religious gatherings and festivals in the region. Authorities have taken extra precautions to ensure that such events, including Holi, are conducted safely and harmoniously.

With the peaceful and vibrant celebration of Holi at the temple, authorities and devotees alike hope that it will continue to serve as a symbol of faith and communal harmony. The administration remains vigilant in maintaining peace in the area while ensuring that devotees can visit and participate in religious activities without fear or hindrance. As the temple regains its prominence, it is expected to attract even more visitors in the coming months, contributing to the region’s spiritual and cultural landscape.
