Shyam Benegal, a legendary figure in Indian parallel cinema, passed away on December 23 at 90.

The filmmaker’s final rites were conducted at the Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai on December 24. Known for his pathbreaking films, Benegal’s passing signifies the end of an era in Indian cinema, with his profound influence continuing to shape the industry.

His trailblazing contributions to Indian filmmaking transformed storytelling and remained a source of inspiration for both audiences and filmmakers.

A recent post shared by a paparazzo account on Instagram captured the late filmmaker’s mortal remains being carried to Shivaji Park by his grieving family.

Naseeruddin Shah, a celebrated actor who collaborated extensively with Benegal, was present to bid a heartfelt farewell to the director.

Several Bollywood personalities are expected to attend the funeral to honor the filmmaker, whose unparalleled impact on Indian cinema has left an enduring legacy.

Shah, reflecting on his bond with Benegal, said, “It’s impossible to express in a few words what Shyam meant to me. I often wonder who I’d be today if not for his belief in me.”
