Kharagpur: In a tragic incident, 27-year-old Harsh Kumar Pandey, a first-year Ph.D. research scholar in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday afternoon, officials confirmed.

Harsh, a resident of Ranchi, had been pursuing his research with dedication, but this incident marks the fifth suspected student suicide at IIT Kharagpur, drawing renewed attention to the mental health challenges faced by students in high-pressure academic environments.

An IIT-Kharagpur spokesperson explained, “His parents were unable to reach him on the phone, and the door of his room was locked from the inside.

On being unable to contact him, the police were informed. Upon breaking into the room, Harsh’s body was discovered around 2 pm.” A formal investigation into the circumstances and reasons behind the incident has been launched.

The Institute released a statement expressing profound grief: The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur deeply mourns the untimely demise of Mr. Harsh Kumar Pandey.

On receiving the information, our security response team, medical team, administrative officials, and local police authorities reached the hostel immediately, and his family was informed promptly.”

A fact-finding committee has been constituted to examine the incident and report its findings. IIT Kharagpur Director, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to student welfare:

“We remain dedicated to creating a supportive ecosystem. Our round-the-clock mental health services are available to every student, and anyone experiencing distress is urged to come forward.”

Growing Concern Over Student Suicides

This tragic loss underscores a worrying national trend of suicides among students in academic institutions. High expectations, intense competition, and social or personal pressures often leave students isolated and overwhelmed. Experts stress that these circumstances require urgent attention and intervention.

While institutions provide academic support, mental health must be prioritized equally. Proactive measures such as mentorship programs, peer counseling, anonymous helplines, stress management workshops, and accessible professional therapy can make a life-saving difference.

Families and faculty should be trained to recognize early warning signs like withdrawal, anxiety, mood swings, or persistent sadness.

Tools and Helplines for Students in Distress

To empower students and prevent such tragedies, authorities recommend the following resources and steps:

  1. Reach Out Immediately:
    • Talk to parents, friends, mentors, or hostel wardens if feeling overwhelmed.
  2. Seek Professional Help:
    • Contact mental health professionals or counselors available on campus.
    • Institutes like IIT Kharagpur have 24/7 counseling services for students.
  3. Use Helplines:
    • KIRAN (Mental Health Helpline) – 1800 599 0019
    • Vandrevala Foundation (Emotional Support Helpline) – 1860 266 2345
    • AASRA Helpline (Suicide Prevention) – 91-9820466726
  4. Anonymous Online Support:
    • Platforms such as iCall (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) or YourDOST provide confidential counseling.
  5. Self-Care and Peer Support:
    • Engage in regular physical activity, meditation, journaling, or peer support groups to manage stress.

Experts stress that prompt intervention is crucial. Encouraging students to speak up without stigma can prevent countless tragedies and foster an environment where emotional well-being is treated as seriously as academic performance.

Call to Action

The untimely demise of young scholars like Harsh Kumar Pandey is a stark reminder that academic brilliance must not come at the cost of mental health.

Institutions, families, and society at large must collaborate to create robust support systems, normalize seeking help, and implement preventive mechanisms. Only then can the growing number of student suicides be curbed, and young lives be nurtured to their full potential.
