INDIA, INDONESIA MOVE CLOSER TO HISTORIC BRAHMOS MISSILE DEAL: KEY DETAILS DISCUSSED AT HIGH-LEVEL DEFENCE TALKS

In a significant boost to regional security cooperation, India and Indonesia on Thursday advanced discussions on the proposed procurement of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, marking a major step toward sealing the long-anticipated weapons sale.

The deliberations took place during the Third India–Indonesia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue, co-chaired in New Delhi by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

The meeting represented a deeper alignment of strategic interests between the two major Indo-Pacific democracies.

As a symbol of growing trust, Rajnath Singh presented Sjamsoeddin with a scale model of the BrahMos missile, underscoring India’s readiness to collaborate on high-end defence capabilities.

Indonesia Poised to Become Second Global Buyer of BrahMos

Should the agreement be finalised, Indonesia will become the second international customer of the BrahMos, following the Philippines, which signed a landmark contract in 2022 to acquire three batteries of the coastal defence version of the missile, with a range of approximately 290 km.

Talks between New Delhi and Jakarta regarding the acquisition have been ongoing for several years, but Thursday’s meeting marked a clear acceleration toward materialising the sale.

The BrahMos missile—a product jointly developed by India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya—is widely recognised as one of the world’s fastest precision-guided cruise missiles, capable of striking targets at supersonic speeds, making it a potent deterrent in maritime and land conflict environments.

Battle-proven and Already Integrated into All Indian Forces

The system is already operational across the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, and has proven its effectiveness in real combat situations.

Notably, the missile was deployed during Operation Sindoor, when Indian forces successfully targeted strategic enemy positions inside Pakistan.

With the rising security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, interest in the BrahMos has significantly increased among global defence forces.

Export Plans Expanding Across Asia, Africa & West Asia

BrahMos Aerospace is aggressively pursuing international markets and plans to export not only the existing variant but also the compact BrahMos NG (Next Generation) system to at least 10 countries. Potential buyers include South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.

Upgrades under development include:

  • Increasing strike range to 500 km for land targets and 400 km for naval targets
  • Enhanced electronic counter-countermeasures to overpower modern air defence systems
  • Design refinements for compact versions suitable for smaller fighter aircraft
Broader Defence Cooperation & Joint Medical Research

Alongside missile negotiations, the dialogue covered expanded cooperation frameworks, including:

  • Joint programmes in defence medicine and military pharmaceuticals
  • Technology transfer, research collaborations, and capacity-building initiatives
  • Strengthening the operational structure under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) and the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and security across the Indo-Pacific region, where geopolitical tensions have steadily increased.

A Strategic Leap Toward Shared Security

The deepening defence and technological partnership between India and Indonesia signals a growing consensus among regional powers to balance strategic challenges and secure maritime boundaries.

The BrahMos deal, once finalised, may redefine Indo-Pacific deterrence dynamics and further establish India as a global defence exporter.
