Iran’s Attempted Strike on Diego Garcia Signals Expansion of Long-Range Missile Capabilities

Iran has reportedly launched two ballistic missiles targeting Diego Garcia, which happens to be a strategically important joint military installation operated by the United States and the United Kingdom in the Indian Ocean.

Although neither projectile successfully struck the base — with one malfunctioning during flight and the other intercepted by a US naval vessel using an SM-3 missile defence system — the incident remains noteworthy due to the extraordinary distance involved.

Diego Garcia is situated roughly 4,000 kilometres from Iranian territory.

Even the capability to attempt such a long-distance strike suggests that Tehran may now possess intermediate-range ballistic missile technology.

This would represent a major advancement beyond its previously known missile inventory, which largely consisted of medium-range systems capable of travelling up to approximately 3,000 kilometres.

Geographically, Diego Garcia is located in the central Indian Ocean, positioned south of India and southwest of Sri Lanka, at an estimated distance of about 4,000 kilometres from Iran.

Only last month, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had stated that the country had intentionally restricted the range of its missiles to 2,000 kilometres, emphasizing that its weapons development programme was “purely defensive” in character.

However, the latest attempted launch appears to contradict that assertion.

According to US officials quoted by the Wall Street Journal, the attempted strike indicates that Iran’s missile capabilities may extend significantly farther than the limits publicly acknowledged by Tehran.

The missile launches were reportedly carried out just hours after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized the United States to utilize the joint UK-US facility at Diego Garcia for operations against a new group of Iranian missile targets, under a mission referred to as ‘Operation Epic Fury’.

Before the launch, Iran’s foreign minister had criticized Starmer, accusing him of endangering British citizens by permitting American forces to operate from British military bases for strikes across the Middle East.

“Iran will exercise its right to self-defence,” he warned — a statement that was followed by the subsequent missile launches.
