Jaishankar Holds Fourth Call With Iran’s Foreign Minister as India Pushes for Dialogue Amid Escalating West Asia Crisis
As tensions continue to intensify across West Asia, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held another round of discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi late Thursday evening, marking the fourth such conversation between the two leaders within the past two weeks.
The dialogue focused on developments affecting both bilateral ties and the wider regional security environment.
On Friday morning, Jaishankar shared details of the interaction through a message on the social media platform X.
In his post, he stated that he had once again spoken with the Iranian foreign minister the previous night and that their discussion covered matters related to India–Iran relations as well as issues connected to the BRICS grouping.
Iran Briefs India on Conflict Developments
According to an official statement released by the Iranian government in Persian, Araghchi informed Jaishankar about the latest developments stemming from what Tehran described as attacks and hostile actions carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
The statement claimed these actions by what Iran referred to as the “Zionist regime” and its allies have had serious implications for regional stability as well as global security.
Araghchi reportedly stressed that Iran’s leadership, armed forces, and citizens remain determined to exercise what he described as their lawful right to defend the country against foreign aggression.
Call for International Condemnation
The Iranian account of the conversation further indicated that Araghchi urged international institutions and regional organisations to publicly denounce the military operations being carried out against Iran.
He also highlighted the significance of BRICS as a platform for strengthening multilateral cooperation among emerging economies.
Araghchi suggested that the grouping should play an active and constructive role at this critical moment in helping safeguard peace and stability both within the region and globally.
India Stresses Need for Regional Stability
The Iranian statement added that Jaishankar reiterated India’s willingness to expand cooperation with Iran in both bilateral engagements and multilateral forums.
He also underlined the importance of working collectively to identify pathways that could reinforce long-term stability and sustainable security across the region.
According to the Iranian account, the Indian minister emphasised that maintaining peace and stability is a shared priority for all countries involved.
Call Follows Modi–Pezeshkian Conversation
Information about the Jaishankar–Araghchi discussion emerged only a few hours after Narendra Modi held his first telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian since the outbreak of the current conflict in West Asia nearly two weeks ago.
During their conversation on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi reportedly addressed what he described as the “grave situation” unfolding in the region. He expressed serious concern about the rapid escalation of hostilities and the increasing number of civilian casualties, as well as the damage inflicted on civilian infrastructure.
India Calls for Diplomacy
Following the exchange, Modi shared a message on X stating that he had urged all parties involved to prioritise dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve the crisis. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and de-escalation in the region.
Series of Diplomatic Contacts
Since the beginning of the conflict, Jaishankar has maintained regular contact with his Iranian counterpart. Before Thursday’s conversation, the two ministers spoke on February 28, March 5, and March 12, underscoring India’s continuing diplomatic engagement with Tehran during the unfolding crisis.
The repeated interactions reflect India’s efforts to remain closely involved in regional discussions as tensions in West Asia continue to affect global security, energy markets, and geopolitical stability.
