Jhansi Vande Bharat Incident Raises Alarming Questions About the Misuse of Power by Politicians and Their Aides
An incident aboard the Bhopal-bound Vande Bharat Express on June 19 has reignited public outrage over the high-handed behavior of politicians and their entourages—people who often arrive at the common man’s doorstep humbly seeking votes during elections, but whose actions later suggest a dangerous sense of entitlement and disregard for public decency.
In this latest case, BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha, who represents the Babina constituency in Jhansi, has come under the scanner after a passenger was allegedly assaulted by individuals said to be his associates. The trigger? A dispute over a train seat.
The passenger, later identified as Raj Prakash, ended up bleeding from the nose—an image that quickly went viral on social media, prompting widespread condemnation.
The BJP, attempting to control the damage, issued a show-cause notice to Parichha on Monday, asking him to explain his conduct within seven days.
The party made it clear that failure to submit a satisfactory response would lead to “strict disciplinary action.” The notice, issued by the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla, referred to the incident as one that had tarnished the image of the party and violated the principles of discipline.
According to preliminary findings by the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident occurred after a disagreement over seat arrangements.
Parichha, who was traveling with his wife and son, reportedly had two seats together, while the third was at a distance. He allegedly requested Raj Prakash to swap seats so that his family could sit together.
When Prakash declined, the MLA approached the ticket examiner, who expressed his inability to make changes. A second request reportedly led to a heated exchange between Parichha and Prakash.
The real trouble began once the train reached Jhansi station. It was there that the MLA’s associates—believed to have come to receive him—allegedly assaulted Raj Prakash, leaving him with visible injuries.
This use of muscle power, common among certain politicians and their aides, once again revealed a disturbing pattern, where those who hold public office or wield political influence feel emboldened to use intimidation or even violence against ordinary citizens.
What makes the incident more disturbing is the fact that this behavior comes from the very individuals who, during elections, present themselves as servants of the people.
They promise humility, accessibility, and respect for the common man. But incidents like these serve as stark reminders that once in power, some leaders—and those surrounding them—quickly shed the humility they once wore like a cloak.
Though Parichha has filed a complaint alleging that he was abused and harassed by two passengers who blocked the aisle and misbehaved with him, the narrative has taken a different turn with the surfacing of videos showing an injured passenger and eyewitness accounts suggesting otherwise.
Raj Prakash, despite being injured, has so far not lodged any formal complaint, though he did meet officials from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP upon arrival in Bhopal.
A police team dispatched to Bhopal to meet him was unsuccessful in locating h,im but gathered CCTV footage from both the train and the station.
Footage from the platform at Rani Kamlapati railway station confirms that Ms. Prakash disembarked from the train.
However, the CCTV cameras inside the coach did not capture any assault, with police officials stating that while there was apparent commotion, a definitive act of violence was not visible.
The Jhansi GRP, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sohrab Alam, is continuing its investigation, with efforts underway to collect all relevant electronic evidence.
While Parichha’s version of the events is being examined, the absence of a formal complaint from the injured party adds another layer of complexity.
Yet, irrespective of the legal technicalities, the incident has struck a nerve with the public.
It has become symbolic of a deeper malaise, where public servants, once elected, sometimes treat the very people who voted them into power with arrogance, aggression, and disdain.
It serves as a reminder that the trust placed in political representatives is sacred and must not be betrayed by displays of unchecked authority and brute force.
The public continues to ask: How long will elected leaders and their entourages get away with intimidating citizens under the protection of power?
And more importantly, will political parties truly hold their own accountable, or will this become yet another case that fades from memory once the outrage dies down?
