KGMU Doctor Accused of Sexual Exploitation and Forced Religious Conversion Arrested in Lucknow

A doctor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), accused of sexually exploiting a woman doctor and attempting to force her religious conversion, was arrested by Chowk Police Station on Friday near the City Railway Station gate.

The accused, Dr Rameez alias Rameezuddin, was carrying a reward of ₹50,000 on his arrest.

Police said the accused was attempting to retrieve crucial documents from his flat in Hussainabad and was also exploring the option of surrendering before a court.

Earlier in the day, Hindu organisations staged protests demanding his immediate arrest. Following the developments, the KGMU administration has recommended the cancellation of Dr Rameez’s admission.

According to Vishwajeet Srivastava, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), the accused hails from Neuria Mohammad Yaar Khan town in Pilibhit district and also owns a house in Khatima, Uttarakhand. In Lucknow, he was residing in a flat at Mumtaz Court Apartments, located behind Sheesh Mahal Talab in Hussainabad.

The case was registered on December 23 on the complaint of an MD resident doctor from the Pathology Department, who accused Rameez of sexual exploitation and coercion.

Explaining the arrest, the DCP said the accused had been in touch with an advocate and was planning either to seek anticipatory bail or surrender in court. He had come to Lucknow to meet the lawyer.

After arriving at the Kaisarbagh bus terminal, Rameez disguised himself by wearing a woollen cap and covering his face with a black muffler. He then boarded an e-rickshaw towards the City Railway Station.

Police teams tracked his movement, with one team following the e-rickshaw from behind and another positioned ahead. The accused was finally apprehended near the station gate while trying to slip away unnoticed.
