LoP Mata Prasad Pandey Accuses BJP Government of Shielding Corruption, Questions Absence of Permanent DGP

Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, alleging that corruption has reached alarming levels and that no effective steps are being taken to curb it.

He made these remarks during the discussion on the Governor’s Address in the state Assembly.

Raising concerns over accountability, Pandey said corruption is rampant across administrative levels—from tehsil offices to senior officials—and ordinary citizens are bearing the brunt.

He questioned the government’s handling of reports submitted by the Lokayukta, claiming that investigation findings are being withheld and not tabled in the Assembly.

Referring to the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta and Up-Lokayuktas Act, enacted in 1975 to ensure transparency in public administration, Pandey argued that the legislation has failed to deliver its intended impact.

He alleged that despite the Lokayukta submitting recommendations against four IAS officers, no concrete action has followed.

He also stated that requests made by the Lokayukta for police support were allegedly ignored.

The Opposition leader further questioned why reports related to several officials—including former Additional Chief Secretary (Social Welfare) Manoj Kumar Singh, certain district-level authorities, and the chairperson of the Sambhal Zila Panchayat—were not presented before the Assembly, despite findings reportedly being submitted.

Criticizing the Governor’s Address, Pandey said he had reviewed it multiple times but found it lacking substantive direction or acknowledgment of pressing governance issues.

He also raised concerns about the absence of a permanent Director General of Police (DGP) in the state.

According to Pandey, appointing an acting DGP weakens administrative stability and hampers effective policing.

He emphasized that the state requires a full-time DGP with a fixed two-year tenure who can function independently and ensure stronger law enforcement across Uttar Pradesh.
