Mamata Banerjee Reaffirms Commitment to Unity at Eid Gathering, Criticises Centre over Voter List Issue

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday joined Eid festivities in Kolkata, where she delivered a strong political message, reiterating her commitment to stand firmly with the people of the state and criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Trinamool Congress supremo attended the celebration along with the party’s national general secretary and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

Addressing the gathering, Mamata expressed concern over the alleged removal of names from electoral rolls during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

She stated that she has already approached multiple judicial forums, including the Calcutta High Court, authorities in Delhi, and the Supreme Court, seeking intervention to safeguard voting rights.

She emphasised that she would continue to support the citizens of Bengal irrespective of religion, caste or social background, describing herself as part of their extended family.

Targeting Prime Minister Modi, the Chief Minister remarked that while she respects all nations and values international relations, she takes pride in India’s pluralistic identity.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s diplomatic engagements abroad, she alleged that political rhetoric based on religious divisions often resurfaces once he returns to the country.

She also criticised references to certain communities as “infiltrators” and asserted that democratic rights must not be compromised.

Mamata further accused the BJP of attempting to consolidate control in states heading towards elections, alleging that individuals aligned with the ruling party are being placed in influential positions.

She claimed that her party would not be intimidated by such developments and alleged that attempts were being made to influence electoral outcomes by dividing voters.

She added that ultimately, the will of the people and faith in the Almighty would prevail over political manoeuvring.

Speaking at the event, Abhishek Banerjee highlighted the shared cultural traditions of India, stressing that the country’s identity is rooted in mutual respect among communities.

Referring to symbolic similarities in festivals, he said India’s heritage reflects harmony where traditions across religions coexist and enrich one another.

He emphasised that festivals convey universal values such as patience, compassion, unity and mutual respect, which should be preserved and promoted.

According to him, society must remain united and celebrate each other’s cultural occasions, particularly at a time when attempts are being made to create divisions between communities.

Without directly naming the BJP, Abhishek remarked that any effort to exclude citizens or create discord among communities would ultimately fail because people are deeply attached to the democratic and inclusive character of the country.

Drawing inspiration from poet Rahat Indori, he said political power is temporary, and leaders must remember that the nation belongs equally to all its citizens.

He further stated that attempts to portray any particular community as being under threat are misleading, urging people to look beyond communal narratives and recognise the importance of protecting the country’s unity and democratic values.

He concluded by asserting that Bengal’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony would remain strong despite efforts to disrupt social cohesion.
