Murder Mystery Deepens: Woman Found in Meerut Field May Be Turkmen National, Identity Under Probe

The murder investigation of a woman whose decomposed body was discovered in a mustard field along the Meerut–Bijnor Highway has grown increasingly complex, with police now piecing together the victim’s movements before her death, her activities in India over the past decade and a half, and her possible international connections.

Body Discovered in Mustard Field

The case first came to light on February 21, when villagers noticed a badly decomposed body lying in a mustard field beside the service road of the busy highway in Meerut district.

The woman’s face had been severely disfigured, apparently through the use of a flammable substance, in what investigators believe was an attempt by the killers to prevent identification.

During the search of the area, police recovered an Aadhaar card close to the body bearing the name Archita Arora, a 35-year-old woman originally from Ambala in Haryana. This led investigators to initially believe that the victim was Archita.

A case of murder and destruction of evidence was registered at the Mawana police station, after which officers began an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crime.

CCTV Footage Leads to Key Breakthrough

Police teams examined nearly 500 CCTV recordings from cameras installed along highways, roads and commercial establishments near the site where the body was discovered.

The footage eventually revealed a vehicle suspected to have been used to transport the body.

Tracking the number plate of the car led investigators to a hotel in Meerut, where further CCTV footage showed that the woman had visited the establishment shortly before her death.

Police then questioned the hotel manager, Chanchal Kumar alias Bunty, who eventually admitted involvement in the killing.

During interrogation, investigators say Kumar revealed that the woman had come to the hotel, and an argument broke out over payment-related issues.

According to the police version of events, the dispute escalated, and Kumar, along with three associates, allegedly suffocated the woman by pressing a blanket over her face.

After realising she had died, the accused reportedly placed the body in a vehicle and transported it to the mustard field along the highway.

The accused then allegedly poured a flammable substance on her face to destroy her features before abandoning the body in the field.

Police subsequently arrested four individuals in the case — hotel manager Chanchal Kumar alias Bunty and his associates Arvind alias Monu alias Gurmukh, Sandeep alias Rahul and Vivek alias Kaka. All four are residents of Meerut and are currently lodged in jail.

Why the Woman Came to Meerut

Investigators are now working to determine why the woman travelled to Meerut and what exactly brought her to the hotel where the confrontation occurred.

Preliminary findings suggest that the woman had visited the hotel several times in the past and may have had financial dealings or personal contacts with the accused.

Police are examining call records, financial transactions and hotel visitor registers to understand the exact nature of her relationship with the suspects.

Officials say the woman had arrived in Meerut shortly before the incident, but the exact route she took and whether she travelled alone or with someone else is still under investigation.

Identity of the Victim Raises New Questions

The investigation took a dramatic turn earlier this week when a woman based in Delhi contacted Meerut Police, claiming that the deceased was actually her friend from Turkmenistan, a Central Asian country.

The woman provided a passport carrying the name Muhabbat Nazhmudinova. Police officials said the photograph on the passport appeared to match the image on the Aadhaar card found near the body.

The development raised serious questions about the victim’s identity, as it suggested that the woman might have been living in India under a different name.

Investigators believe the woman may have been residing in India for nearly 15 years, but her activities during this period remain largely unclear.

Contact with a friend and an investigation into the past

Police have attempted to contact the friend who came forward with the passport in order to gather more information about the victim’s background, travel history and personal connections.

Officials said the friend has shared limited details so far, stating that the woman had been living in India for many years but had maintained contact with acquaintances from her home country.

Investigators are trying to obtain additional information from her, including the victim’s original identity, how she entered India and what kind of work she was engaged in during her stay.

Ministry of External Affairs Involved

Because of the uncertainty surrounding the woman’s nationality, the police have now reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs for assistance.

Authorities have sent the passport details to the ministry requesting verification of the document, along with information about the woman’s visa records, immigration status and travel history.

Officials hope that confirmation from immigration databases will help determine whether the woman was indeed a Turkmen citizen and whether she entered India legally.

Efforts to Locate Family Members

Police are also attempting to locate the victim’s family members. Investigators initially visited Ambala, where the Aadhaar card indicated she was from, but discovered that the woman had shifted to Delhi several years ago.

Authorities are now working to trace relatives or acquaintances who may have known her during her time in India.

If the passport information proves accurate, officials may also have to coordinate with diplomatic authorities to trace her family in Turkmenistan.

Post-Mortem Confirms Cause of Death

The post-mortem examination conducted on the recovered body confirmed that the woman died due to smothering, consistent with the police claim that she was suffocated during the altercation at the hotel.

Investigators say the probe is continuing on multiple fronts — reconstructing the victim’s final journey to Meerut, verifying her identity, and determining the full circumstances that led to the murder.

With unanswered questions about who the victim really was and why she travelled to Meerut shortly before her death, the case remains one of the most puzzling criminal investigations in the region in recent weeks.

Analysing the story, the hotel manager’s version appears cooked up. There are greater chances that either she was raped, or an attempt had been made to rape her.

Police appears to be trying to pass it off and close the case.

Then why does this foreign national, doing business in India for fifteen years needs to be probed thoroughly?

What is the identity of her fiend?

What is her friend’s profession? What this murdered woman was up to. What was the purpose behind her Meerut visit?

It is being said that the woman had made earlier visits and stayed at the hotel. What for. Was she a spy or into some kind of other racket? Maybe drugs.

What is her parents’ take? Police needs to piece together every version from all her contacts. How often did she talk to her parents?

Whose names figure in her mobile contact list.

Where was she getting money from? Was she employed in Delhi? These are some of the finer angles police need to look into seriously.

Meanwhile, according to reports, A woman from the Lebap Velayat area of Turkmenistan has reportedly contacted the police througha video call and claimed that the woman was her daughter.
