Nepal’s unrest has taken a dark and brutal turn, with mobs directly targeting senior political leaders and their families in a wave of unprecedented violence.

The tragic death of Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, has shocked the nation. She succumbed to burn injuries after protesters set the family home in Dallu on fire. Despite being rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, her life could not be saved.

The attack is the latest in a chain of violent incidents as the Gen Z-led demonstrations enter their second day. The protests, which began as an outcry against the government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, have spiraled into a full-blown revolt against the political establishment.

Despite the ban being lifted, public anger has not subsided. Instead, it has intensified into direct assaults on the country’s political class.

Brutality Against Leaders and Families

In scenes rarely witnessed in Nepal’s modern history, mobs stormed and set fire to Singh Durbar (the central administrative complex) and Sheetal Niwas (the presidential residence).

The homes of President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and former premiers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sher Bahadur Deuba were also torched.

The assault on Deuba’s residence turned especially vicious. Both Deuba and his wife, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were reportedly attacked by demonstrators, highlighting the shocking scale of rage directed at leaders and their families.

Rising Toll of Violence

With two more deaths reported on the second day of unrest, the death toll has climbed to 22, while more than 300 people have been injured.

The protests, initially about digital freedom, have morphed into an outpouring of decades of accumulated frustration—over corruption, poor governance, and the widening disconnect between Nepal’s rulers and its restless youth.

Hidden Hands and Underlying Anger

Observers and political critics believe that the sheer brutality of the violence suggests the involvement of forces eager to exploit Nepal’s deep-rooted discontent.

The ban on social media, far from quelling dissent, may have acted as the immediate trigger, igniting an already combustible situation fueled by years of public dissatisfaction with the ruling class.

Oli Steps Down

Amid the chaos, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned, his aide Prakash Silwal confirmed. In his letter, Oli said he was stepping down “to facilitate a solution to the problem and to help resolve it politically.” But his resignation, seen by many as an inevitability, has done little to calm the fury on the streets.

A Nation on Edge

The scale and savagery of these protests have pushed Nepal into uncharted territory. Once confined to disillusionment expressed through ballots and strikes, public anger has now erupted into outright attacks on leaders, families, and institutions.

The violence not only exposes the fragile state of Nepal’s democracy but also hints at the dangerous possibility of manipulation by vested interests exploiting public frustration.

The days ahead will determine whether Nepal can rein in this firestorm—or whether the crisis will deepen into an uncontrollable collapse of political order.
