New Town Hideout Busted: Five Arrested in Kolkata Over Gangster Chandan Mishra’s Murder in Patna Hospital ICU

5
Kolkata/Patna – In a breakthrough, a joint operation by the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police and the Patna Police led to the arrest of five individuals in connection with the brazen murder of gangster Chandan Mishra, who was shot dead inside the ICU of a high-end hospital in Patna on July 17.
The arrests took place in the early hours of Saturday from a residential apartment in a housing complex located in New Town, the fast-developing satellite township on the eastern fringe of Kolkata.
The individuals, according to law enforcement officials, had fled Bihar soon after the daylight killing and were hiding in a flat, attempting to evade capture by blending into the anonymity offered by New Town’s sprawling residential complexes.

High-Tech Tracking and Coordinated Crackdown
Investigators revealed that the accused were tracked using mobile phone tower data, which eventually led the police to the exact apartment in which they were hiding. “All five were traced to the same location. Four of them had direct roles in the execution of the murder,” a senior officer involved in the raid confirmed.
The Bihar Police will now seek a transit remand from a local court in Kolkata to bring the arrested individuals back to Patna for further interrogation and prosecution.

Chilling Hospital Assassination Caught on Camera
The murder of Chandan Mishra, a known gangster with a criminal record spanning at least 24 cases, including 12 murders, shocked the nation due to the audacity and planning with which it was executed.
On July 17, five armed men, led by notorious criminal Tauseef Badshah, stormed Patna’s Paras Hospital, bypassed security, and entered the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the second floor, where Mishra was undergoing treatment under judicial custody. Despite the presence of police personnel assigned to guard him, the assailants fired multiple rounds at close range and killed Mishra on the spot.
CCTV footage of the incident went viral soon after, showing the gunmen walking calmly through the hospital corridors, executing the killing, and leaving the premises without apparent resistance. Shockingly, videos later emerged on social media showing the group celebrating outside the hospital shortly after the crime.

Gang Rivalry and Jailhouse Fallout: Sheru vs Mishra
Police investigations suggest that the attackers belonged to a rival faction led by gangster Sheru, a former close aide of Chandan Mishra. The two had a falling out while lodged in Bhagalpur jail, eventually turning into sworn enemies.
Six other suspects had earlier been detained from Patna and Buxar, while the latest five, apprehended in New Town, were the most elusive until their arrest on Saturday.

Security Lapses Under Scrutiny
In a statement to the media, SP Patna (Central) Diksha noted that an internal probe was already underway to determine how armed assailants managed to infiltrate a high-security facility without resistance.

“This raises serious concerns about the hospital’s internal security as well as possible complicity or negligence on the part of staff or officers on duty,” she said. “The fact that five unmasked and armed men reached the ICU, fired shots, and exited without hindrance is alarming.”

Political Fallout: Opposition Slams Bihar Government
The incident has triggered a fierce political backlash, with opposition parties questioning the collapse of law and order in Bihar.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav issued a scathing criticism of the state administration, stating, “Criminals, protected by the government, shot at a patient admitted to a hospital. Is anyone safe in Bihar anymore?
Independent MP Pappu Yadav went a step further, claiming he had received threats for raising questions about the case. He demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in Bihar, suggesting that the murder had casteist undertones and was symptomatic of a complete collapse of governance.

New Town: A Growing Criminal Refuge?
The arrests have once again cast the spotlight on New Town’s growing reputation as a haven for criminals, not only from different parts of India but even from across international borders.
Over the past few years, law enforcement has cracked several high-profile criminal hideouts in New Town, raising alarm bells about the security implications of unchecked urban sprawl and high turnover in rental properties.
June 2021: Gangsters from Punjab Killed in New Town Encounter
In one of the most widely reported cases, Jaipal Singh Bhullar and Jaspreet Singh, two fugitives from Punjab, were gunned down in a dramatic police encounter inside a high-rise apartment in the Shapoorji Pallonji complex in New Town.
The duo, wanted for killing two Ludhiana policemen and linked to over 50 criminal cases across five states, had assumed fake identities and kept a low profile. The flat was rented by an associate posing as a car parts dealer. The police recovered weapons, cash, and documents following a tip-off from Punjab Police.

July 2024: Bangladeshi Pirate Arrested After Year-Long Hideout
Just weeks ago, Majnu Ghazi, a notorious pirate from Bangladesh, was nabbed from New Town after hiding there for almost a year. He had entered India illegally via riverine routes in the Sundarbans and was wanted for robbing fishermen in Indian waters.
Following his arrest, another Bangladeshi national, Kamal Sheikh, believed to be part of the same network, was also arrested. A pipe gun and live ammunition were recovered, and authorities suspect a larger illegal migration and identity forgery racket is in operation.

Concerns Mount Over Urban Security and Verification Mechanisms
These repeated episodes are fueling growing concerns among citizens, urban planners, and security agencies. With its rapidly expanding skyline, transient population, and limited identity checks in private rentals, New Town has emerged as a magnet for fugitives, who exploit urban anonymity and technological gaps in interstate criminal tracking.
Experts have called for stricter tenant verification protocols, better data sharing between state police forces, and more tech-enabled surveillance infrastructure in areas witnessing high rates of in-migration.
