Demonstrating its deep concern for the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad, the Government of India successfully evacuated dozens of students from Jammu and Kashmir stranded in conflict-hit Iran under the ongoing Operation Sindhu.

The mission, launched in response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, once again highlighted the Centre’s responsiveness and commitment to safeguarding Indian nationals overseas, especially students in crisis zones.

Over 100 students, including Sheikh Afsa, were brought back to Delhi through a coordinated and smooth airlift operation.

Speaking to ANI, Afsa shared her relief and gratitude, saying, “We never expected to be evacuated so seamlessly — the government reached us at our dormitories and assisted us at every step. We are truly thankful to the central government for prioritising our safety.”

Echoing similar sentiments, another student noted, “Despite the dangerous circumstances in Iran, the entire process was so well managed that it didn’t even feel like an emergency evacuation. Everything was calm and smooth. We appreciate the Indian Embassy and central authorities for their efforts.”

While the central government’s operation drew praise from students for its efficiency, concerns were raised about their onward travel from Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir. Many students expressed disappointment with the poor condition of the buses provided for their journey home.

Calling the vehicles “unsafe and substandard,” they urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to take swift corrective action.

One student stated, “After such an organised evacuation by the Centre, we were hopeful the state administration would ensure the rest of our journey would be equally smooth. But the buses arranged were in such poor condition, it felt like our safety was being overlooked.”

In response to growing student concerns, the Office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah promptly addressed the issue on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“The Chief Minister has taken note of the request of the students evacuated from Iran regarding the quality of buses arranged to transport them from Delhi to J&K.

The Resident Commissioner has been tasked with coordinating with the JKRTC to ensure proper deluxe buses are arranged,” the statement read.

Despite the setback in the final leg of their return, the students recognised the government’s broader effort in ensuring their safe exit from a volatile region. Their voices serve as both a testament to India’s growing commitment to its overseas citizens and a reminder of the importance of ensuring every step of their journey is met with care and dignity.
