Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that his government has initiated a nationwide effort to return thousands of crores of rupees lying unclaimed in banks, insurance companies and investment institutions to their legitimate owners, calling it a mission driven by trust and public accountability.

Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, he emphasised that collective participation is essential to create meaningful transformation.

PM Modi revealed that ₹78,000 crore belonging to citizens remains unclaimed in Indian banks, while ₹14,000 crore is lying with insurance companies, around ₹3,000 crore with mutual funds, and nearly ₹9,000 crore in unpaid dividends.

“This money belongs to the poor and middle-class families. It is our responsibility to identify the rightful owners and ensure they receive it,” he said.

He noted that special camps have already been organised in nearly 500 districts across the country, leading to the return of several thousand crores to verified beneficiaries.

“This is not just about returning assets; it is about restoring faith. This is a mission of trust,” he added.

Transformation Reflected in Changing Mindset

Discussing the summit’s theme, Transforming Tomorrow, PM Modi said that when a 101-year-old newspaper like Hindustan Times—blessed by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Madan Mohan Malaviya and G.D. Birla—speaks about transformation, the nation gains greater confidence.

“The transformation happening in India today is not merely a discourse on possibilities. It reflects evolving lives, shifting mindsets and a new direction for the nation.”

Solar Power Revolution in Kashi

PM Modi, who is also the MP from Varanasi, highlighted the success of the PM Suryaghar Free Solar Scheme. More than 26,000 households in Kashi have installed rooftop solar plants, generating over three lakh units of electricity per day.

Residents collectively save around ₹5 crore per month, amounting to ₹60 crore per year. The initiative also helps reduce nearly 90,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to planting more than 40 lakh trees.

“These figures represent only Kashi. Imagine the impact nationwide,” the Prime Minister said.

India’s Strong Economic Growth

The Prime Minister underlined that India’s GDP grew by over 8% in the second quarter, significantly higher than the global average of 3% and far above the G7 nations’ average growth rate of about 1.5%.

“This is not merely a statistic. It is a powerful indicator of India’s economic strength and momentum,” he said.

He also highlighted major tax reforms, noting that individuals earning up to ₹12 lakh per year now pay zero income tax, something unimaginable a decade ago.

The transformational journey of the nation, he said, is not just about development but also about a shift in national mindset and self-belief.

“No country can progress without confidence,” he stated.
