PM Modi strongly discusses cross border terrorism with Chinese President Xi Jinping
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly emphasized the issue of cross-border terrorism during his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who briefed the press on Sunday.
Speaking at a special briefing, Misri highlighted that Prime Minister Modi had firmly underlined how cross-border terrorism poses a serious threat to both India and China, stressing that mutual understanding and cooperation between the two nations are vital to effectively addressing this challenge.
Cross-border terrorism was brought up by the Prime Minister as a matter of top priority. He emphasized that this is a shared concern for both India and China and called for extending support and understanding towards each other in our joint efforts to combat terrorism,” Misri stated.
The foreign secretary further noted that China had demonstrated constructive cooperation and understanding regarding India’s counter-terrorism concerns, particularly in the context of discussions at the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
Modi’s First China Visit in Seven Years
Prime Minister Modi is currently in China to participate in the SCO Summit in Tianjin. This marks his first visit to China in seven years. His bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping was the second face-to-face interaction between the two leaders since they reached an agreement in October last year to de-escalate tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The LAC standoff, which began in April-May 2020, had plunged India-China relations to their lowest point since the 1962 war.
Focus on Border Peace and Bilateral Stability
During the talks, Modi reiterated the importance of peace and stability along the India-China border, asserting that this is a critical prerequisite for the smooth and steady development of bilateral ties.
The boundary issue was discussed in depth. Both leaders acknowledged last year’s successful disengagement efforts and noted the maintenance of peace in the border regions since then,” Misri said.
“The Prime Minister reiterated that peace along the border is essential for strengthening bilateral relations. Both sides expressed consensus on utilizing existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to manage the boundary issue and to ensure that differences do not escalate into disputes,” he added.
Cooperation Over Rivalry
According to Misri, both Modi and Xi emphasized that India and China are primarily focused on their domestic growth and development agendas and should see themselves as partners rather than adversaries.
There was a shared recognition that a stable and cooperative relationship between India and China would be beneficial for the 2.8 billion people of our two nations,” Misri noted.
Both leaders acknowledged that shared interests outweigh differences, agreeing that disputes must not be allowed to derail the overall relationship.
There was also a strong sense that India-China cooperation is pivotal to achieving an Asian century and establishing a truly multipolar world order, with a multipolar Asia at its center.
