Trump Signals ‘Positive Developments’ in Iran Talks, Warns of Military Action if Deal Fails
Washington, April 19: Amid continuing uncertainty over the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, US President Donald Trump on Friday hinted at what he described as “pretty good news” emerging from ongoing diplomatic engagements, but chose not to reveal details, saying developments were still unfolding.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump struck a cautiously optimistic tone while referring to the evolving situation in the Middle East.
“We had some pretty good news about 20 minutes ago,” he said, suggesting that discussions related to Iran were progressing in a direction that could potentially stabilise tensions in the region.
However, the US President avoided elaborating on the nature of the development, saying only that the outcome was something that “should happen” and “makes sense”, indicating that Washington remains hopeful about reaching an understanding that could prevent further escalation.
Despite the hint of progress, Trump made it clear that the current ceasefire may not be extended indefinitely if negotiations fail to produce a long-term framework.
He warned that the United States could revert to military action if diplomatic efforts collapse.
“Maybe I won’t extend it,” Trump said, referring to the ceasefire arrangement. He added that the blockade imposed on Iranian ports would remain in force for now, underscoring that Washington intends to maintain economic pressure on Tehran even as talks continue.
In a stark warning, the US President said that failure to reach an agreement could lead to renewed military strikes.
“If we don’t do a deal, we will get it in a different form — a much more unfriendly form,” he remarked, suggesting that the option of force remains on the table.
Trump also indicated that Wednesday could prove to be a decisive moment in determining whether negotiations yield results or tensions escalate once again.

Separately, Trump referred to discussions involving Xi Jinping, stating that the Chinese leader was pleased with indications that the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors — was either open or in the process of reopening.
The US President also spoke about his forthcoming meeting with Xi in China, describing it as potentially “special” and even “historic”, hinting at broader geopolitical discussions that may go beyond trade and security issues.
Trump added that he would address the media again on Saturday at a separate press conference, though he clarified that the briefing would focus on a subject unrelated to Iran.
