PRAYAGRAJ: Taking disciplinary action following the lynching of a roadways bus driver, the Prayagraj Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar has suspended TP Nagar outpost in-charge Rajesh Kumar Chaubey for negligence and ordered a departmental inquiry against the Dhoomanganj Station House Officer.
On Wednesday, the Police Commissioner himself led an operation to nab the accused hailing from the nearby Mariyadih area, but they were all found to be on the run.
Meanwhile, tension is still writ large in Prayagraj’s Dhumanganj area on Tuesday after this horrific daylight murder near a petrol pump in the Mundera area.
A roadways bus driver, identified as Ravindra Kumar alias Munnu (40), was brutally beaten to death with bricks and stones by a group of youths following a heated altercation.
The incident triggered widespread outrage among locals. Within hours, hundreds of residents and the victim’s family members blocked the Prayagraj–Kanpur Highway, placing the body on the road and staging a protest that lasted nearly three hours.
The agitated crowd vandalized a petrol pump, a roadways bus, and several vehicles, forcing the police to call in Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units to restore order.
Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar, along with senior officers and police forces from multiple stations, personally reached the scene and took control of the situation.
After prolonged persuasion, the protesters finally agreed to lift the road blockade following assurances of swift justice and strict legal action against the culprits.
An FIR has been registered at Dhoomanganj Police Station against seven named accused — Hasnain, Nurain, Ali, Hussain, Kamran, Irfan, and Kaif — along with four unidentified individuals.
The police have already initiated a search operation, raiding the accused persons’ homes in the Mariyadih locality on Wednesday. However, all suspects are currently absconding.
Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar stated that the crackdown was being conducted under his direct supervision to send a strong message that criminal acts of any nature will not be tolerated and that law and order will be upheld at all costs.
He further assured that if the accused are not apprehended soon, proceedings under the Gangster Act and the National Security Act (NSA) will be initiated, and property attachment (seizure) will follow as per court orders.
The incident began when Ravindra, who worked as a contractual driver with the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, stopped at the Mundera petrol pump to refuel.
There, a dispute broke out with a group of young men, which quickly turned violent. The attackers allegedly hurled bricks and stones, fatally injuring Ravindra. He was rushed to SRN Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the tragedy, Ravindra’s family members — including his wife Nisha, daughter Riya (15), and son Sonu (8) — were inconsolable.
His brother, Narendra Kumar alias Rajan, alleged that the accused had threatened Ravindra earlier, and despite prior complaints, the police had failed to take preventive action.
The situation was further inflamed after videos of the attack and subsequent chaos went viral on social media, showing both groups pelting stones and Ravindra collapsing after being struck on the head.
Although the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, it intensified public anger.
Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati expressed deep concern over the brutal killing of a Dalit man, urging the Uttar Pradesh government to take the strongest possible action to ensure that such crimes do not go unpunished.
The Prayagraj–Kanpur highway remained blocked from 2 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., paralyzing traffic movement across the region until the police intervention restored calm.
Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar’s leadership of the raids and his stern warning to criminals underlined a clear message — the administration will act decisively to protect citizens and maintain peace.
