Rahul Gandhi Visits Family of Pahalgam Attack Victim in Kanpur, Backs Demand for Martyr Status
During his two-day visit to his current parliamentary constituency, Rae Barel, and his former constituency, Amethi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited the family of Shubham Dwivedi in Kanpur on Wednesday.
Shubham was among those killed in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
During the emotional meeting, Shubham’s grieving family requested that he be officially recognized as a martyr.
Gandhi assured them of his full support and informed them that he had already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to convene a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the Pahalgam terror incident and its aftermath.
Earlier in the day, as Gandhi arrived in Amethi—his first visit to the constituency since choosing to contest from Rae Bareli in the last Lok Sabha elections—posters criticizing him on various issues appeared at multiple locations across the area.
In Kanpur, Gandhi was accompanied by Congress general secretary Avinash Pande, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai, and other senior party officials.
Speaking to the media, Shubham’s wife, Aishanya, said, “We appealed to Mr. Gandhi for martyr status for Shubham, and he promised to stand with us.”
Shubham’s father, Sanjay Dwivedi, also shared that Rahul Gandhi facilitated a phone conversation with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who described the family’s demand as “justified.”
Later in the day, Rahul Gandhi posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating:
Today, I met the family of Shubham Dwivedi, who lost his life in the cowardly terror attack in Pahalgam. I offered my condolences and support.
The entire nation stands with the bereaved families in this tragic moment. Strong and decisive action must be taken against the perpetrators, and justice must be ensured for the victims’ families.”
The visit underscored the Congress party’s push for government accountability in addressing national security concerns, while also emphasizing the need for recognition and support for those affected by terrorism.
