In Lucknow, a serious case of alleged abuse has come to light: the warden of a girls’ residential school has been formally booked for allegedly harassing, threatening, and assaulting girl students, following an inquiry into multiple complaints.
What Happened & Official Response
Two days ago, a group of students — accompanied by their parents — approached District Magistrate Vishak G during the Samadhan Diwas to present their grievances. They claimed the warden had subjected them to both mental and physical harassment, and provided photographic evidence to back their claims.
In response, the administration acted swiftly:
- The warden was removed from her post and attached to the office of the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA).
- A three-member inquiry team was formed, which submitted a preliminary report on Sunday.
- Based on the findings, a notice of termination has been issued against the warden, who was serving on a contractual basis.
No arrests have been made so far. A formal FIR was filed following a complaint by Block Education Officer Sunil Kumar Kannojia.
Allegations by the Girls
During the inquiry, the students alleged that the warden:
- Discriminated against certain girls in distributing items in the dormitory
- Physically assaulted them over trivial issues
- Used abusive language
- Threatened to expel or further harass them if they reported her
- Forced them into menial labor — cleaning toilets, cutting vegetables, rolling chapatis, and other kitchen/dorm duties
The complaint has been registered under relevant penal sections, including BNS sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult), 351 (criminal intimidation), as well as provisions under the Juvenile Justice Act.
Latest Updates
- The FIR was registered late Sunday night by the Mohanlalganj police, specifically naming Sudha Yadav, the warden-cum-superintendent of Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls’ School, Bhujouli.
- The FIR contains detailed accusations of both physical and mental harassment, compelling students to clean toilets, and threats of expulsion for reporting abuse.
- Meanwhile, the DM’s committee, led by ADM (Civil Supply) Jyoti Gautam, has already visited the school, recorded statements from several girls, and is set to revisit for further inquiry.
- The DM has assured strict action should the allegations be substantiated, citing the seriousness of abuse and intimidation charges.
- For immediate safety, CCTV surveillance has been installed in the hostel, and personnel from the Prantiya Rakshak Dal (PRD) have been deployed at the school gate.
Why This Case Is Significant
This episode has sparked widespread concern about the safety and rights of girls in residential schools, especially considering that they are in a vulnerable position. The bravery shown by the students in coming forward — and with evidence — underscores the urgent need for institutional accountability.
That the state administration has acted quickly, removing the accused and mobilizing a transparent inquiry, shows a shift toward zero tolerance for abuse in educational institutions. Whether this becomes a turning point for student protection and administrative vigilance remains to be seen.
