The Allahabad police have started coming down heavily against roadside boozers in Civil Lines and other areas of the city.
Police confronted several doctors and lawyers consuming alcohol in cars parked on roadsides in the Civil Lines area the other day and took them to the police station for violating the law.
Later on, assurance police set them free after they furnished personal bonds never to drink publicly again.
For a long alcohol, consumers were being spotted drinking either inside cars or after parking two-wheelers turning their seats into a bar table.
All liquor shops openly sell throw-away glasses and snacks thus increasing their sales.
But drinking in public places is prohibited under the law. Police had been getting complaints from people that several such merrymakers had been passing comments at girls and ladies after getting drunk.
The city has several markets but Civil Lines is the most frequented by officials and intellectuals of the city including their families.
Sources said the recent increase in crime against women coupled with complaints has increased police vigilance.
Fearing action against themselves, Civil Lines police have now started a drive against such illegal ways of drinking on Road sideroad sides which has added to several cases of road accidents that are caused by drunken driving.
