Threats Against Maha Kumbh Spark Concern Amid Heightened Security in Uttar Pradesh
A video on social media platform X has raised the alarm by threatening disruptions at the upcoming Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Shared on December 24, the footage features a man making inflammatory remarks against Hinduism and political leaders while issuing threats of violence during key festival dates: January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3, 2025 (Basant Panchami).
Responding swiftly, Uttar Pradesh police registered a case at the Cyber Police Station in Pilibhit. Authorities confirmed the investigation is ongoing but refrained from sharing details about the suspects involved. The incident has heightened security concerns as preparations intensify for the grand religious gathering, which attracts millions of pilgrims.
The video’s emergence coincides with a significant security operation in Pilibhit, where three terror suspects were killed in an encounter. The suspects were reportedly linked to a grenade attack in Punjab’s Gurdaspur and identified as Gurvinder Singh (25), Virender Singh alias Ravi (23), and Jaspreet Singh alias Pratap Singh (18), all residents of Gurdaspur.
The joint operation, conducted by Uttar Pradesh and Punjab Police in the Puranpur area of Pilibhit, was led by Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash. According to officials, the suspects were directly involved in the Gurdaspur grenade attack. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, all three succumbed to the injuries sustained during the encounter.
This series of events has underscored the need for heightened vigilance in Uttar Pradesh, particularly with the Maha Kumbh drawing closer. Security forces have intensified surveillance, and additional measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of participants.
Police are also working to trace the origins of the video and identify individuals or groups behind the threats. Cybercrime experts are assisting in the investigation, aiming to prevent potential acts of violence during the festival.
The Maha Kumbh, a major religious event held every 12 years, is considered one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world. The threats and recent encounters have cast a shadow over preparations, but authorities are committed to ensuring the event proceeds peacefully.
