Tragedy at Karur Rally: 38 Dead as Stampede Rocks Vijay’s TVK Event
Soon after a devastating stampede at his party rally in Karur claimed the lives of 38 people, including 16 women and six children, actor and TVK founder Vijay expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the incident.
On Saturday, Vijay took to the social media platform X to voice his heartbreak, describing the tragedy as “unbearable” and “indescribable.
”My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express,”
Vijay wrote, offering his condolences to the families of the deceased and praying for the speedy recovery of those hospitalized. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.
I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” he added.
Officials confirmed that at least 150 people were hospitalized across Karur and Tiruchirappalli, with half a dozen in critical condition.
According to reports, the chaos began shortly after 7:30 pm behind the van from which Vijay was addressing the crowd.
Several supporters, who had climbed a tree to gain a better view, fell onto the tightly packed crowd approximately 50 meters away, triggering panic and sending attendees scrambling in all directions. Men, women, and children were crushed in the ensuing stampede.
Unaware of the full magnitude of the tragedy, Vijay left the stage soon after the incident and traveled back to Chennai. Police sources stated that he was briefed about the fatalities during a stopover in Tiruchirappalli en route to his flight.
While he refrained from speaking to the media, Vijay held discussions with local police and TVK functionaries regarding the disaster.
In response to the incident, the Tamil Nadu state government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each victim and facilitated the transfer of patients to government and private hospitals, including Apollo, to ensure timely medical care.
Witnesses and officials on the ground revealed that prior permission had been granted for 10,000 attendees, with 500 police personnel deployed. However, the gathering swelled to an estimated 30,000 people, creating dangerous overcrowding conditions.
