Tragedy on the Highways of Prayagraj: Multiple Road Accidents Leave Death and Injuries in Their Wake
PRAYAGRAJ: A series of road accidents across different parts of the district over the past two days has left several people dead and many others injured, underscoring once again the peril of unchecked speeding and negligence on highways.
From festive processions being mowed down by a car to fatal motorcycle crashes, the city witnessed a grim succession of tragedies.
Mau Aima: Car Rams Into Durga Idol Immersion Procession
The most shocking incident occurred near Mohammadpur Sarai Ali along the Prayagraj–Pratapgarh Highway on Thursday evening.
Residents of Sultanpur Khas village, including men, women, and children, were joyfully walking with music and dancing toward the Sharda canal at Madari for Durga idol immersion rituals, when tragedy struck.
Just 500 meters from their homes, an uncontrolled speeding car ploughed into the crowd, leaving nearly a dozen people injured.
Among the victims were 20-year-old Sanjana, 14-year-old Nancy Patel, 14-year-old Shikha Patel, 16-year-old Radhika Gautam, 17-year-old Rupa Patel, 19-year-old Lalita Patel, 35-year-old Dhanraji, 15-year-old Pooja Patel, 16-year-old Radha Patel (all from Sultanpur Khas), and 58-year-old Ram Lotan Pasi from Lokapur.
Locals rushed the injured to the Mau Aima Community Health Centre, while those in critical condition — Sanjana, Pooja, and Lalita — were referred to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital for advanced treatment.
Eyewitnesses allege that the car was being driven recklessly by a 15-year-old boy who had taken the vehicle out of a nearby service center after a wash.
In the process, he also hit a motorcycle rider, Lal Mohammad of Mohammadpur Sarai Ali, before losing control and ramming into the festive procession.
Lal Mohammad is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Police later confirmed that both the car and the underage driver had been taken into custody.
Puramufti: Woman Killed in Motorcycle Collision
In another accident, 55-year-old Sanno, with fe of Afak Ahmad of Mohiuddinpur Sallahpur, was killed in the Puramufti area. While crossing the road after alighting from an auto, she was struck by a speeding motorcycle. She died on the spot. Police have seized the bike and are searching for the rider.
Sahson Bypass: Two Dead, One Critical After Fair Visit
On Wednesday night, three youths returning from the Dussehra fair in Babuganj met with tragedy on the Sahson bypass when their motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle around 1 a.m.
The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Anuj Bhartiya of Katka village and 16-year-old Satyam Yadav (alias Pukki Lal) of Mathura village, Tharwai, while 30-year-old Ranjit of Katka village sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at Swaroop Rani Hospital.
Naini: Youth Killed as Bike Crashes Into Stationary Truck
On Friday evening in Naini, another life was lost when 24-year-old Vikas Keserwani, son of Amar Nath Keserwani of Kajaria, Jhunsi, rammed his motorcycle into a stationary truck near the Leprosy crossing railway underpass.
The impact left him with fatal head injuries. Though passersby immediately alerted police, who rushed him to SRN Hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police Statement
Commenting on the Mau Aima tragedy, DCP Kuldeep Singh Gunawat (Ganganagar Zone) confirmed that the car and its underage driver have been detained. Investigations are underway, and strict action will follow.
A Pattern of Negligence
The spate of accidents has once again brought road safety into sharp focus. Overspeeding, underage driving, lack of enforcement, and poorly monitored highways remain constant threats in and around Prayagraj, claiming innocent lives during routine activities — whether festive celebrations or daily commutes.
