Trump at UNGA: India, China Funding Russia’s War, NATO Falling Short on Energy Sanctions
New York: Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, former US President Donald Trump accused India and China of being major financial supporters of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine due to their continued purchase of Russian oil.
He also criticized NATO countries for failing to take strong action to reduce energy imports from Moscow.
India and China ‘Funding the War’
Trump stated, “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to buy Russian oil. But, inexplicably, even NATO countries have not significantly cut off Russian energy and energy products. As I discovered two weeks ago, I was shocked—they are effectively funding the war against themselves. Who the hell ever heard of that?”
US Ready to Impose Strong Tariffs
He further warned that if Russia is unwilling to negotiate a peace settlement, the United States is “fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs,” which he believes would quickly halt the bloodshed.
Trump urged European nations to coordinate with the US in implementing such measures for them to be effective.
Highlighting Domestic Achievements
Turning to domestic matters, Trump reflected on the state of the US economy. “One year ago, our country was in deep trouble.
Today, we are the hottest country,” he claimed, enumerating what he called the achievements of his administration. “America is blessed with the strongest economy, border security, military, friendships, and spirit.”
He highlighted that his administration had introduced “the largest tax cuts in American history,” with a strong stock market and rising wages.
On border security, he said, “For the last four months, the number of illegal aliens entering our country has been zero. Our message is very simple: if you come illegally to the US, you are going to jail.”
Ending Global Conflicts
Trump also claimed credit for resolving international disputes, stating that he had ended seven wars since returning to office. He cited conflicts between Israel and Iran,
Pakistan and India, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Serbia and Kosovo. “No other president has ever done anything close to that,” he asserted.
Critique of the United Nations
Regarding the UN itself, Trump criticized the organization for not “living up to its potential.” He said its responses to conflicts have often been limited to “empty words” and recalled his earlier, unsuccessful efforts to remodel the UN headquarters in New York.
