Undertrial Killed Inside Bijnor District Jail After Inmate Clash Over Minor Dispute
Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh – In a disturbing turn of events inside the Bijnor district jail, a 25-year-old undertrial prisoner lost his life following a violent altercation with a fellow inmate on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Ashu Chauhan, a resident of Kashipur in Uttarakhand, who had been lodged in the jail since October 2023 in connection with a theft case.
Minor Dispute Turns Fatal Behind Bars
According to jail officials, the fatal incident occurred inside Barrack 13-B. The accused in the case has been identified as Zakib, 24, a native of Bijnor, who is currently in custody facing charges under multiple serious provisions, including robbery, the Gangsters Act, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The jailor of Bijnor District Jail, Ravindra Nath, explained that the jail administration was alerted to a brawl between two inmates. A rapid response team rushed to the barracks, where they found Ashu Chauhan severely injured and unconscious, with significant bleeding. He was immediately shifted to the jail hospital and subsequently referred to the district hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment.
Clash Stemmed from a Mundane Dispute
Initial investigations indicate that the two inmates had their beds positioned next to each other. A verbal argument allegedly broke out over the cleaning of the bedding area, a seemingly minor issue that escalated unexpectedly into a physical confrontation. Other inmates inside the barracks reportedly attempted to intervene and stop the fight, but by then Chauhan had suffered critical injuries.
The jail administration noted that no previous complaints or indications of hostility between the two undertrials had been reported before this fatal clash. The authorities have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against Zakib at Kotwali Police Station.
Investigation Underway, Body Sent for Postmortem
The body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem, and the police have stated that they are awaiting the medical report to determine the full extent of injuries and the cause of death.
Chauhan’s family, upon receiving the devastating news, arrived at the jail from Uttarakhand. Officials confirmed that his body will be handed over to the family after the postmortem formalities are completed.
The incident has triggered concern and unrest within the jail premises, with questions being raised about inmate supervision, conflict resolution mechanisms, and overall safety within correctional facilities.
The case has highlighted the fragility of inmate dynamics in Indian jails, where overcrowding, poor mental health support, and lack of monitoring often contribute to spontaneous outbreaks of violence, sometimes with fatal consequences.
