UP ATS Arrests BDS Student from Moradabad for Alleged ISIS Links; 19-Year-Old from Saharanpur Under Probe

In a significant development in Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing crackdown on suspected terror networks, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested a 19-year-old BDS student for allegedly having links with a module associated with the banned terrorist organisation ISIS.

The accused, identified as Haris Ali, a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student and a resident of Saharanpur district, was apprehended from Moradabad on Sunday, March 15, following sustained surveillance and intelligence inputs.

Arrest After Intelligence Inputs

According to ATS officials, Haris Ali had been on the radar of security agencies for some time. Inputs suggested that he was allegedly in contact with individuals linked to an ISIS-inspired module operating within and possibly beyond the state.

Acting on these leads, ATS teams conducted a targeted operation in Moradabad, leading to his arrest without any immediate incident.

Officials stated that the action was part of a broader effort to dismantle potential sleeper cells and prevent radicalisation among youth.

Digital Evidence Under Scanner

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused may have been active on encrypted communication platforms and social media channels where extremist content was being circulated. Authorities are examining his mobile phone, laptop, and other electronic devices to trace:

  • His communication with suspected handlers or associates
  • Possible involvement in online radicalisation networks
  • Any plans or intentions linked to unlawful activities

Sources suggest that investigators are also looking into whether he had pledged allegiance or was in the process of being recruited into a larger module.

Network and Possible Links

The ATS believes that Haris Ali’s case may not be isolated. Efforts are underway to identify other individuals who may have been in contact with him or part of the same network.

Agencies are coordinating with central intelligence units to map out the broader structure of the alleged module.

Officials have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests as the investigation progresses.

Legal Action Initiated

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other applicable laws. The accused is being interrogated to uncover the extent of his involvement and to gather actionable intelligence.

He is expected to be produced before a court, where the ATS will seek custody for further questioning.

Focus on Youth Radicalisation

The arrest has once again highlighted concerns over the growing use of online platforms for radicalisation, particularly targeting young individuals, including students.

Security agencies have been intensifying monitoring efforts to identify and intervene in such cases at an early stage.

Authorities have urged educational institutions and families to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavioural changes or online activities.

Security Tightened

Following the arrest, security has been heightened in sensitive areas, and intelligence units are on alert to prevent any potential fallout.

Officials have reiterated that proactive measures are being taken to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

The investigation remains ongoing, with agencies working to piece together the full extent of the alleged network and its operations.
