On the first day of his official visit to India, United States Vice President JD Vance expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing their meeting as an “honour” and calling the Indian leader a “great leader.”

Vance, who is visiting India along with his family, shared his gratitude on social media after being hosted at the Prime Minister’s official residence in New Delhi.

“He was incredibly kind to my family,” Vance wrote on platform X (formerly Twitter), responding to Prime Minister Modi’s post about the meeting.

“It was an honor to see Prime Minister Modi this evening. He’s a great leader… I look forward to working under President Trump’s leadership to strengthen our friendship and cooperation with the people of India.”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During their interaction, both leaders reaffirmed the strength and depth of the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi underscored the shared commitment to enhanced collaboration across diverse sectors, including trade, defence, energy, technology, and cultural exchange.

“Pleased to welcome US Vice President JD Vance and his family to New Delhi,” PM Modi posted. “We reviewed the fast-paced progress following my visit to the US and meeting with President Trump.

We are committed to mutually beneficial cooperation.” He added that the India-U.S. relationship would be a defining global partnership of the 21st century.

Launch of COMPACT Initiative

A key highlight of the meeting was the formal launch of the India–U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) — a new strategic framework designed to deepen military, trade, and technological collaboration between the two nations.

According to a statement released by Vice President Vance’s office, COMPACT is “anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill, and robust engagement of their citizens.”

The initiative is expected to enhance security coordination and economic connectivity in alignment with the broader goals of both nations.

Progress Toward a Bilateral Trade Agreement

The leaders also marked a significant step forward in trade relations by formally announcing the finalisation of the Terms of Reference for the US–India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

This agreement sets the stage for detailed negotiations aimed at boosting job creation, enhancing economic resilience, and improving supply chain integration.

The BTA, according to the statement, represents a chance to develop a “modern trade agreement” focused on shared economic priorities that promote the well-being of workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries.

The statement noted that the agreement is inspired by India’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ vision and America’s aspiration for a ‘Golden Age’, signaling a mutual commitment to long-term prosperity.

Continuing the India Visit

Following their engagements in the capital, Vice President Vance and his family traveled to Jaipur as part of the second leg of the four-day visit.

On April 23, the delegation is scheduled to visit Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, before concluding the official tour. The trip ends with their departure from India on April 24 at 6:40 AM.

This visit comes shortly after a successful meeting between PM Modi and President Donald Trump in Washington earlier this year, further cementing the trajectory of India–U.S. relations toward greater strategic convergence and mutual growth,
