In a shocking case of alleged dowry harassment and public humiliation, police in a district of Uttar Pradesh arrested a man for reportedly cutting off his wife’s braid at a beauty parlour, an incident that has left the local community stunned.

The matter came to light after the woman’s father, identified as Radhakrishna, lodged a formal complaint against his son-in-law, Rampratap, at the local police station.

In his statement to the authorities, Radhakrishna alleged that his daughter had been subjected to continuous mental and emotional harassment at the hands of her husband and in-laws ever since her marriage roughly a year ago.

According to the complaint, the harassment was primarily linked to repeated demands for dowry. Radhakrishna claimed that Rampratap and his family had been pressuring his daughter for additional dowry items, including household appliances such as a refrigerator and a cooler, even long after the wedding ceremonies were over.

The victim had reportedly endured this harassment in silence for months, but the situation took a more serious turn in recent weeks.

The father further informed the police that the tension escalated to such an extent that he had to bring his daughter back to her parental home just a week prior to the incident, fearing for her safety and emotional well-being.

However, things turned even more alarming when the accused, Rampratap, allegedly confronted his wife in public. On the day of the incident, the woman had gone to a local beauty parlour to have her eyebrows shaped.

It was there, according to the complaint, that Rampratap, accompanied by three unidentified men, arrived at the parlour and, in a fit of rage, allegedly cut off his wife’s braid.

Confirming the case, Circle Officer Ravi Prakash told reporters that the police had received the complaint and arrested Rampratap.

“According to the victim’s father, this was not just a case of physical assault but part of a broader pattern of dowry-related harassment. The accused’s actions at the beauty parlour were both an act of public humiliation and domestic violence,” the officer said.

While the father firmly linked the assault to the ongoing dowry harassment, some local residents provided a slightly different perspective.

According to witnesses, Rampratap had been angered by his wife’s decision to visit the beauty parlour — an act he allegedly disapproved of — and this fueled the violent outburst. “Locals said the accused was upset that his wife went to the parlour to get her eyebrows done without his knowledge or approval,” the Circle Officer added.

The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and all angles — including both dowry harassment and personal dispute — are being thoroughly examined. Further legal action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry and statements from other potential witnesses.

The incident has once again raised concerns about dowry-related violence and control over women’s personal freedoms in the region, and the police have assured that the matter will be handled with the seriousness it deserves.
